My story is set in 1930's England, and the plot point I am working with, is the realization that a character (villain) is intending to run off and disappear. Our Intrepid Sleuth finds evidence that Villain has booked passage overseas. The exact route and destination are not so important

One notes that on 1, the character would have a lot less difficulty falsifying documents to get a false name on the manifest. Records were a lot less rigorous then.

I thought of this because, in a book about florists, I read about florists who had difficulties delivering bouquets to actors who were traveling under their real, not stage, names, so the manifest was no help.
