My story is set in 1930's England, and the plot point I am working with, is the realization that a character (villain) is intending to run off and disappear. One notes that on 1, the character would have a lot less difficulty falsifying documents to get a false name on the manifest. Records were a lot less rigorous then.

I thought of this because, in a book about florists, I read about florists who had difficulties delivering bouquets to actors who were traveling under their real, not stage, names, so the manifest was no help.
