Since your story's set present-day, I'd say that the best one I ever knew of is gone.
Volunteer Park is a GIANT no. It's not as bad as it used to be, but NO. Kerry Park is on Queen Anne, so northish of downtown and I'm not sure where your characters are going. Seahurst closes at dusk (and is gated, so there's no sneaking in). Observatory Park I don't know. Redondo Beach is well out of the way of anyone going from Auburn to Seattle.
There's a bunch of negatives. *g* I'll think about it when I'm out of class and see if I can think of one around here somewhere; the one I used to go to was at the airport, and there's no longer access to that side of the airport due to the construction of our third runway. Where are your characters ultimately going to in Seattle? (That'll narrow down places that are out of the way.)
It doesn't really matter if it's out of the way, neither has a curfew or anything like that, so they don't have to worry too much about time. They're heading back to downtown, though, if that helps some.
The negatives are great! It rules places out, which is very helpful :) Thanks!
Gasworks Park might be a contender. I don't know of it as a makeout spot - and it tends to be a bit skeevy at night, because it's pretty much not in a residential area, oddly enough, so there's some junkie/homeless traffic, but it might be a good option, because it's not gated, and it has some fantastic views (though not from the parking lot - still, your characters could go look at the lake and the gasworks and then go back to their car if that works for your story
( ... )
Thank you. That's really helpful. I'll take a look at Green Lake. It being north of downtown is useful too, because I can then have them go past where the gf thinks they're going to in terms of an unexpected "the night's not over yet" feel. And I'll definitely have a look around with Google Earth to see if I can work out some specifics. Thank you!
I know that feeling. Whenever anything about LA/SoCal comes up I'm always super-excited.
I guess that it's true that the sorts of places you see in movies don't really exist anywhere. My MC just has a very idealized idea of the 'perfect' high school date, and though they're both adults, he's quite horrified that his gf never went on one and is trying to recreate that feeling.
I'd kind of prefer they were able to stay in the car, really, but if that's not going to be possible, I can work around it. Maybe have them walk and make-out and when things get a little too heavy for public consumption, they head back to the car.
They're heading back to downtown, but it might work well that they go north of there, since I want his gf to be a little surprised that the night isn't over yet after the drive-in. I'll definitely look up Gas Works Park, it may work really well, and Golden Gardens sounds like it may work well too.
No the park doesn't have to be a part of the set-up. It just needs to be somewhere they can park and make-out really, but the view adds to the romantic feel. Thanks.
Well, yes, but I guess I was thinking that Seattle is a lot like LA in that respect, a big city where a lot of the illumination comes from the city itself. I was thinking of places like Santa Monica beach, where I've been well after midnight and still had pretty romantic views.
Westcrest Park in SW Seattle! The parking lot closes at dusk, but they could park on 8th and it's easy to sneak in. There's a gorgeous view of downtown and lots of trees to hide in. They'd have to be careful sneaking in because it's it's cheek-to-jowl with the Mounted Police's stables, but it's doable. And downtown in the dark is pretty.
Seahurst Park in Burien might be acceptable, though it may also be gated after dark (it's been a year since I've been there, and can't remember). You can watch the Sound and the lights on Vashon Island from there ... and the ferries going back and forth.
Another possible spot is somewhere along Alki Beach in West Seattle. It's not terribly private, though, as in a main road travels along the entirety of it, though there are places to park. From there, you see Seattle's skyline as well as the ferries going to Bainbridge Island and the lights there.
From Alki, aren't you most likely to see the ferries headed to Vashon Island? Because there's the Alki-Vashon run, and the downtown Seattle-Bainbridge/Bremerton runs seem like they'd be pretty distant...
I think people are suggesting that Seahurst Park is gated after dark, but Alki Beach may work wonderfully. I can use some of my own experiences with Santa Monica beach after dark in that scenario, and the view sounds like it would be exactly the sort of place my MC would want to take his gf. Thank you!
