Yes, I recognise it, though I wouldn't expect it to crop up in everyday conversation. I'm going to go with 2. as I don't think I've ever heard it used in 'real life', haha.

Alice, though if we'd have been having a conversation about sci-fi, i'd have thought Alice first and then Matrix. Heh.

Definitely 1. The only times I've heard the phrase were in references to Alice in Wonderland.
