Dog Breed/Ancestry

Nov 13, 2007 15:03

Is it possible for someone to tell me the breed of the dog in the following pictures? I have no idea if she's purebred or mixed, but if someone can even tell me a possible ancestry for her (like "she may be part x breed" or something), that'd be great! :)

If it helps, the setting is modern-day Japan.

I think she's probably at least part long-haired Dachshund -- thanks! :)

Thirded, though she definitely has a denser coat and paler color than average.

If I had to guess, I would say this dog looks like a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Dachshund.

Ha, that was actually my first thought when I first saw her ("aww, she's like a Dachshund pretending to be a Golden Retriever!"). :> Thank you!

Looks like a rough coated/long haired Dachshund from here. Unusual color though. Try Google pictures of "Long Haired Dachshunds" and see if that's it.

Based on the pictures I found via Google, I think she's definitely part long-haired Dachshund. Her face doesn't look Dachshundy to me though, and apparently purebreds don't have that coloring, so I guess she's a mix.

Thanks a lot!

Purebreds don't always follow the standard, I think she is a purebred, just because she would not be so perfectly weiner dog shaped if she was a cross, or if she isn't pure, it was at least a generation or more ago. There are white German Shepards, even though the standard says there shouldn't be, and my aunt's weiners have faces that are definitely not the way they should be, one has a roman nose and the other has a shorter, almost upturned muzzle. Can't tell I'm a dog person, can you?

I knew that, of course, deviations always happen, but I didn't know they could be that dramatic. I'm probably coming off as an idiot throughout most of these comments. :)

I think I'm now convinced that she's at least mostly Doxie, though...

I'm thinking mixed, myself...the build looks like dachsund to me, but the coloration and ears are more...hmm. Golden retriever, maybe?

Not an expert, though.

Yeah -- I Googled "long-haired Dachshund" after the first few replies, and I'd say she's definitely part Dachshund. :> I like the idea of the Golden Retriever though -- the coat looks to be the right color, and her face and ears look pretty consistent to me (although I'm no expert either ;).

Thanks!

Ah! I see what you mean. Sorry, I'm bad enough at human genetics; my understanding of doggy breeding is worse. :) After looking at all the comments, I now think she may be a Doxie/long-haired Dachshund of some sort.

Thank you for your help! (And your dog is absolutely gorgeous, btw. Give her a hug from me. :3)

Your vet or local shelter should be able to tell you, but, I'd agree with definite Dachshund and the likely Golder Retriever mix.

It's for a fic, not my dog, so I don't know how much more they'd be able to tell me, based on just the pictures. (Then again, I'm woefully ignorant about vets beyond "they keep my kitties well", so maybe I should look into it. :) I think Dachshund/Golden Retriver mix seems to be the general consensus though.

Thank you!
