Jaejoong knew what was waiting for him when they reached the safe house. He pushed past Dojin and the rest of the men, and his blood boiled at the sight of Jaewook seated on the sofa that Yunho had been sitting on hours before.

“I expected you to be here sooner,” Jaewook said as he stood up and placed his hands in the pockets of his pants, “You did have a head start after all.”

Jaejoong clenched his fists, “Let’s get to business.”

“Ah, so you speak,” Jaewook commented with a smile as he took a few steps forward to Jaejoong. He glanced at his men, “Stay here with those allied to Yunho. If something goes wrong, then you all know what to do.”

Dojin crossed his arms, “Don’t think we don’t know what to do if things go wrong either.” He spoke as he watched Jaewook’s men from the corner of his eye, “Don’t expect for us to give in without a fight.”

A twisted smile graced its way across Jaewook’s face, “Of course not. I expect only the best from you Dojin.” He reached forward and took hold of Jaejoong’s wrist, “Shall we meet in private?”

Jaejoong wrenched his wrist out of Jaewook’s grip. “Don’t touch me.” He hissed before he strode away from Jaewook and led him into another room of the safe house. There were two couches, and there was a coffee table in between them. Jaejoong sat down on one, and Jaewook sat down across him.

“Well, I’m sure you know by now,” Jaewook said as he reached into pocket and placed a bloodied strip of fabric onto the coffee table. “Yunho’s dead.” He leaned back and clasped his hands together.

Jaejoong’s eyes settled at the strip of bloodied fabric, and his heart clenched in agony as Yunho’s words ran through his mind. He held back his anger and clenched his fists tightly, “What do you expect me to do?” he asked after he’d raised his eyes to meet Jaewook’s.

“There are two options for you two choose from,” Jaewook started as he raked his eyes over Jaejoong’s body and smirked at him. “Your first option would be to surrender. Allow me to take over the syndicate, and stand down.”

“What about my sister?”

“I’d put an end to my little affiliation with her,” Jaewook answered easily, “I never for a second believed that you would fall for my little act of being in love with her the moment you realized who I was.” He chuckled, “Besides, you’re much more entertaining than she is.” His eyes settled on Jaejoong and he smirked, “I’m sure you and I will get to know each other very well.”

Jaejoong swallowed his disgust and spat out harshly, “Get to my second option.”

Jaewook reached into his coat and set a pistol down onto the coffee table. He pushed it towards Jaejoong, “This is your other form of submission.” He leaned forward and inched the gun closer to him, “Kill yourself and your family will be spared from any further harm and you’ll get to join Yunho - wherever he is.”

Jaejoong stared down at the cold, metallic weapon before he reached forward and took hold of it. His fingers clasped the gun tightly, and he stared down at it, “How will I know that my family will be taken care of?”

The other man shrugged, “You’ll have to have faith in me,” he answered.

Jaejoong picked up the gun and took it off safety mode. His hand didn’t shake as he raised it, and just as he was about to raise it to his head, Yunho’s last words rang in his head.

Live on for me, please.

Jaejoong could feel the tears prickling at the corners of his eyes, and he shook his head sadly as he thought of Yunho. His heart clenched tightly in his chest, and he felt like crying. He couldn’t live on without Yunho, but Yunho had sacrificed so much for him, to let everything go would put to waste all that Yunho had done.

Jaejoong clutched the gun tighter, and he raised his eyes to meet Jaewook’s.

Yunho had loved him, and he would never forget that.

Before Jaewook could pull out his own gun or even attempt to move away, Jaejoong directed the gun forwards and shot Jaewook straight in the head. Not a single sound resounded afterwards, and Jaejoong held the gun tightly in his hand as he watched Jaewook bleed out onto the sofa.

He felt nothing as he watched blood run down onto the floor, and he waited for people to rush through the door to see what was wrong, but no one came. Jaejoong spared one last glance at Jaewook’s body before he reached into his pocket and texted Dojin.

Jaewook is dead.

He waited for a few minutes, and as soon as he heard the sound of gunfire, he stepped out from the room and joined the fray. It wasn’t long before all of Jaewook’s men were taken care of, and as soon as the gunfire stopped, Jaejoong dropped the gun that he’d been holding.

He raised his eyes and scanned the room. Jaejoong caught sight of Dojin kicking the corpse of a man, Junsu pocketing his gun, and Yoochun looking around the bloody room.

“Changmin is a traitor.” He spoke, his words echoing throughout the room. “I don’t want him alive. If he’s seen or found, I want him killed on the spot,” Jaejoong ignored the fact Yoochun turned away and strode out the room, and he walked over to where Dojin was.

“I’m sure Jaewook has other allies. I want them to be rid of.”

Dojin nodded and several men followed him out the room. Men filtered out afterwards but made sure to bow to him before they left, and the last person who was with him in the room was Junsu.

Junsu walked over to where Jaejoong was and bowed. When he stood up and straightened out, he met Jaejoong’s cold gaze. “Tonight, Yunho transferred over all his accounts and financial assets over to you. You are currently the CEO of Jung Industries.”

Jaejoong was silent, and the mere mention of Yunho’s name made his heart clench painfully in his chest. He could think of nothing to say, and he was thankful that Junsu spared him the need to reply.

“I’m sorry for your loss.” Junsu murmured softly, “Yunho was a great man.”

“I know.” Jaejoong answered hollowly. “Thank you for telling me about this, and I’m sure you would like to attend to other matters now. I shall call upon you sometime in the near future.”

Junsu bowed once more, and as soon as the door shut behind him, Jaejoong felt his grief seize him again. His heart ached in his chest, and his being was utterly cold. The sorrow refused to slip away from him, and he could feel hardly anything.

He felt no fear, and no joy. All he felt was just an overwhelming and aching sense of loss.

I won’t let you die.

Jaejoong’s own words rang in his ears, and he fell to his knees as he sobbed. They’d made promises to one another - he’d promised to be there for Yunho, to keep him safe, and to always be with him, yet he’d failed completely.

Life was cruel, and it had taught him a painful lesson that he would keep forever.

Not all promises could be kept.
