“Please tell me you didn’t.” Junsu commented as soon as he caught sight of Jaejoong approaching.
Jaejoong blinked at Junsu, “What?”
“You did, didn’t you?”
“Would you stop speaking in riddles?” Jaejoong questioned as he brushed past Junsu as he made his way to the library. “If there’s something that you want to say, then I prefer you said it now rather than make me guess.”
“You went back to that club, and you slept with someone.” Junsu said finally as he made his way next to Jaejoong. He pointed at a spot on Jaejoong’s neck, “Whoever you slept with left an obvious mark. Does your mother know about how you’ve suddenly taken a complete turn in -“
Jaejoong stopped in his tracks and glared at Junsu, “Do you really need to bring her up? What I do in my free time really shouldn’t be of her concern.” He ran a hand through his hair, “God, Junsu…I just want to live.”
“We are living.” Junsu shot back bluntly, “I don’t see why you’ve suddenly gotten enamored by drinking, partying, and flirting, but I want this to stop. Jaejoong, you have bigger things to think about -“
“You sound like my mother.”
“I’m just trying to remind you to be responsible!”
“I am being responsible!” Jaejoong argued, “I’m not wandering around drunk, and I’m not going home with just anyone. I’m seeing someone, and I like him, and he likes me, and I’ll be okay.”
Junsu narrowed his eyes, “Who are you seeing?”
“His name is Yunho, he’s in a band, and he’s nice.” Jaejoong answered, “I’ll be seeing him again later tonight, so can we please just go to the library now? I really don’t feel like debating my choice in men with you.”
“Jaejoong -“
The best friends stared at each other, and Jaejoong sighed. He ran a hand through his hair again in frustration, “I’ll be okay. Trust me, okay Junsu? I know what I’m getting into, and I’ll be able to handle myself just fine.”
Junsu watched Jaejoong carefully, “If he runs off with a groupie and breaks your heart, I’m going to kick his ass. Tell him that.”
Jaejoong laughed, “Okay then.” He glanced at the library, “So, can we go to the library now? I kind of have a date in a couple of hours, and I want to be done with this paper as soon as possible.”
“Oh, yeah…”
“What now?”
Junsu scratched the back of his head, “Well your mother called yesterday, since apparently you weren’t answering your phone. I just remembered that she left a message for you.”
Jaejoong’s eyes narrowed, “What did she say?”
“She’ll be dropping by the dorm tonight.”
o-o-o
Jaejoong unlocked the door, and Junsu walked past him.
“Well, what did your boyfriend say?” Junsu asked as he sat down at the kitchen table and began to rifle through the contents of his wallet, “Are you still going to meet him later?”
“I had to reschedule.” Jaejoong said as he walked into the kitchen and set down the groceries onto the counter, “He said it was okay, and I told him I’d meet him next Saturday, okay?”
Junsu looked up from his spot by the dining table, “Yeah, sure.” He poked his head into the kitchen, “I’ll be going now, okay? I’d like to be spared from a brutal interrogation.”
Jaejoong glanced at Junsu, “You’re deserting me?”
“Yeah.” Junsu answered before he walked over to Jaejoong, “Last time your mother came over, she told me that I gained weight and that my shirt made me look even fatter.”
“Still, you’re usually here whenever she visits -“ Jaejoong gripped the carton of soy milk helplessly, “Fine, you should go. She’ll probably be here in a couple of minutes.” He put the carton into the refrigerator, “Come back in three hours.”
“Alright.” Junsu replied as he took the spare keys off the counter, “Jaejoong…just remember, she’s your mom and she’s only telling you things because she wants the best for you -“
“Yeah, yeah.” Jaejoong muttered as he began to plate the muffins he’d bought from a nearby bakery. “I’ll be sure to remember that.”
The apartment fell silent as soon as Junsu left, and Jaejoong placed the muffins he’d bought onto the dining table. He wiped his hands on his pants, and walked around the tiny apartment to ensure that everything was clean.
He went to the bathroom and fixed his hair before he noticed the hickey that Yunho had left the day before. Jaejoong went through his things and quickly placed blemish cream over it so that his mother wouldn’t make a comment about it.
He stared at himself in the mirror for a few seconds before the doorbell rang, and his phone buzzed in his pocket.
Jaejoong exhaled slowly and took his phone out of his pocket. He was expecting his mother’s number, but instead the message was from Yunho.
Honey funny bunny <3
A smile crossed Jaejoong’s lips and he shook his head in amusement. Despite the ringing of the doorbell, he texted back a question mark to Yunho. Less than a minute later, a reply came.
You know you like it.
Jaejoong rolled his eyes and texted Yunho back before he left the bathroom to answer the doorbell.
If my mother knew anyone was calling her son honey funny bunny, I think one of her nerves would pop. Remind me to never introduce you to her in the future.
The moment he was about to open the door, his phone buzzed. Jaejoong decided to brave his mother’s wrath, so he checked his phone.
Thinking of introducing me to your mother already my little Jae bunny? So cute. <3
Jaejoong rolled his eyes and texted back his one word reply.
Asshole.
o-o-o
Jaejoong watched as his mother picked apart at the muffin, his hands clasped together tightly on the tabletop. She was as beautiful as ever, and age hardly left a single mark on her flawless face.
“Why weren’t you answering your phone?” his mother asked after she’d finished chewing. She gazed at him with eyes identical to his, “What have you been doing? You weren’t at home when I called yesterday either. You should be studying.”
“I’ve been busy.” Jaejoong lied.
“Busy with who?” she questioned as she cut another piece of muffin, “I didn’t think that you liked interacting with anyone outside of Junsu.”
Jaejoong shifted in his seat, “Well, I’ve been busy studying and doing the usual.” He clasped his hands together a bit tighter, “I’m sorry I was absent minded and forgot to answer your calls.”
“Make sure it doesn’t happen again.” his mother chastised. She looked up at him and frowned, “You look terrible - like you’ve gained weight or something. Where have you been lately?” her eyes raked over his body, “I don’t like the way you’re beginning to dress either.”
Jaejoong swallowed hard and stared down at the table, “How would you like me to dress mother?”
“I don’t want you to look anything like those kids I see on the street lately - do you want me to buy you new clothes?” his mother questioned, “No, don’t answer. I will buy you new clothes. You need to learn how to dress.”
“Mother -“
“What?”
Jaejoong shook his head and averted his eyes, “Nothing.” He sat up straighter and finally met his mother’s gaze, “I think that -“
“Why don’t you visit me more often?”
“I’m busy mother.” Jaejoong murmured tiredly. He traced a spiral onto the wooden surface of his table and shook his head, “I need to start building up my own life, it’ll be hard to do so if I’m always reliant on you -“
“Don’t be an idiot, I didn’t raise you to be overly independent. I think you and I should meet more often - I don’t want you to end up like your father, always running around and doing whatever he wants.”
“I’m not like him.”
Jaejoong resisted the urge to run his hands through his hair in frustration, but he kept his mouth shut. His mother hated his father, and he’d known that ever since they’d divorced. His father had cheated on her and had ruined their perfect family. His relationship with his father was non-existent, and his relationship with his mother was complicated.
Kim Yeonhee relied on him to live out the dreams she’d never gotten to fulfill, and she set out expectations that he wasn’t sure he could ever achieve. She’d chosen things for most of his life, and the day he’d told her he was gay, his mother had been sent to the hospital due to stress.
She often acted like she didn’t know he was gay, and he chose to let her continue thinking that way. It made things easier for the two of them, and as her son, he decided that it would be a sacrifice he’d endure.
They pretended like their relationship was fine. He dropped his ambitions to be an artist in favor of her desire for him to get a stable job, and he avoided dating so that he wouldn’t have to introduce anyone to her.
“Of course you’re not like him honey.” Yeonhee said with a bright smile as she reached out and squeezed his hand, “I raised you perfectly. Oh yes, I have someone I want to introduce to you.”
“Who?”
Yeonhee flashed a brilliant smile, “This lovely girl who’s the daughter of one of my friends. I think the two of you would get along perfectly, and who knows, maybe the two of you could end up -“
“Mother, I’m gay.” Jaejoong breathed out, his voice tight. He watched as disappointment flooded her face, but he continued. “I told you…I don’t want to -“
“Jaejoong, please.” His mother insisted, “Meet this girl. I assure you that she’s of the finest standing, and you two will look perfect next to each other.”
“I’m seeing someone.”
Jaejoong’s words sat heavily in the air, and a slight horrified expression crossed Yeonhee’s face. She stared at him for a few seconds, shook her head, and promptly stood up.
“I…I don’t want to meet him.” Yeonhee choked out as she grabbed her coat and put it on hastily. “Keep you grades up Jaejoong, or I’ll be disappointed.” She stared at him for a few seconds, “Do you love me?”
“I do love you, mother.”
Yeonhee walked up to Jaejoong and brushed back strands of his hair, “I love you too, Jaejoong.” Her smile brightened, “Now, are you sure you don’t want to meet that girl I was talking about earlier? Who knows, she might steal your heart.”
Jaejoong’s stomach sank, and he stared back at his mother blankly. “I don’t know mother, I’m busy studying.”
“My poor baby, always busy studying.” His mother patted his cheek, “Now, make sure you do your best. Everything needs to go smoothly and absolutely perfect.”
Her eyes raked over his body, and her smile faltered. “Baby, make sure to tone down on your intake and go to the gym more. You’re starting to gain weight. I don’t want you to look like your father after we’d gotten married. Lay off all those terrible fast food, like cheeseburgers.” Yeonhee picked up her bag and smiled at Jaejoong once more. “I love you honey.”
“I love you too mother.” Jaejoong chorused.
As soon as the door closed, Jaejoong dropped onto the floor. He buried his face between his knees and breathed slowly, trying to make sense of everything that had just happened.
He would never be perfect.
Love was tiring, stupid, and painful. Jaejoong let out a few more shallow breaths, and after a few minutes, his phone began to buzz in his pocket. He pulled it out and stared at the text message on the screen.
Are you hungry bunny? I feel like eating right now.
Jaejoong stared at the message numbly, but before he could even reply, another message came.
You need to gain weight. Pizza and beer?
Jaejoong gripped his phone a little tighter and stood up. He took the main key to the apartment and tucked it into his pocket before he locked the door and left. As he made his way down the stairs, he called Yunho.
“Ah, bunny, you called.”
“I don’t want to eat pizza.” Jaejoong murmured as he skipped the last two steps and made his way out of the apartment building, “What else can we go out and eat? I’m okay with beer though.”
“My honey, funny, alcoholic bunny doesn’t have that nice of a ring to it. I’ll make sure you only drink Coke.” Yunho chuckled huskily over the line, “What about cheeseburgers and fries?”
A smile crossed Jaejoong’s face, “Okay, I think that’d be perfect.”
o-o-o
There were more people in the diner than expected, but Jaejoong assumed that he and Yunho were the only ones there under the age of twenty five. He sat down across the other man and smiled slightly.
“Well, I ordered for you.” Yunho spoke, “You’re not picky about your food, right?”
Jaejoong shook his head although he’d been raised to be picky. He felt himself relax as Yunho began to talk about his performance, and as he watched Yunho tell his story animatedly, his mood perked up slightly.
“Jaejoong?”
“Uh, yes?”
“You’re zoning out.” Yunho chuckled and poked Jaejoong’s cheek. “I know I’m handsome, but please, stop staring -“
“I wasn’t zoning out.” Jaejoong glanced at Yunho, who was looking at him with such an open and intent expression on his face. “What?”
Yunho reached forward and carded his fingers through Jaejoong’s hair. He slowly brought their faces close together, and he kissed Jaejoong softly and languidly, their lips moving against each other naturally.
Jaejoong’s eyes fluttered shut, and he inched closer. Yunho didn’t press for anymore, and their kisses remained slow but passionate. When Yunho pulled away, Jaejoong blinked at him questioningly.
“You’re so beautiful.” Yunho said with a smile, “You should smile more though.” He pulled away from Jaejoong, and just as Jaejoong was about to protest, a waitress placed their food down onto the table.
Jaejoong watched her leave, and he glanced down at his food.
You’re starting to gain weight.
He felt sick.
“Yunho, I -“ Jaejoong turned his head, but before he could get another word out, Yunho had forced a French fry into his mouth. He blinked at Yunho and was about to spit it out, but Yunho put in another.
“You’re so skinny.” Yunho chastised, “Whenever I hold you, I feel like you’re going to break in my arms. Come on now,” he poked Jaejoong’s stomach, “Chew.”
Jaejoong chewed slowly, and Yunho rolled his eyes.
“You’re not on a diet are you?”
“I -“
“You don’t need to go on one.” Yunho muttered as he placed more of his fries onto Jaejoong’s plate, “Besides, it’s more enjoyable when you can do whatever you want, right?” he smiled at Jaejoong.
Jaejoong bit his lip, “You’re so…”
“So what?”
To be honest, Jaejoong had no clue as to how to describe Yunho. He didn’t know how Yunho always seemed to know what to say, and he didn’t know how to say that he was growing so attached to the other man.
He didn’t know how to say that Yunho made him happy.
So instead of words, Jaejoong decided to kiss Yunho. It was slightly messy, and when Jaejoong pulled away, there was a faint trace of grease at the corner of Yunho’s lips. He wiped it away with a napkin, and Yunho laughed.
“Do you love me?”
Jaejoong froze, and he recalled his mother. He remembered her gaze, and he stared back at Yunho - did Yunho require an answer? He still had no idea about what he felt, but he needed time to think things through. Would Yunho leave if he didn’t say yes and say the words he wanted to hear?
Yunho chuckled before he pinched Jaejoong’s cheek and turned to his food, “Bunny, you’re too cute - though you looked more like a deer caught in the headlights after I’d asked the question.”
Jaejoong watched Yunho carefully, “So you don’t expect an answer?”
Yunho glanced at Jaejoong, “Of course not. Take your time.” He poked Jaejoong’s cheek, “Now come on, I won’t let you leave until you finish all the food on your plate.”
Jaejoong smiled, “Okay.”
I think I could love you - someday.
< > Author’s Note: So, we are introduced to Jaejoong’s mom. .___. I always intended her to be that way, and their dialogue is somewhat inspired by a scene in the drama What’s Up and by my experience with overly possessive mothers (not my own, I am glad to say). I hope to get things moving along a bit faster in the next chapter, but hey, now Jaejoong is more willing to be with Yunho, and that’s a great thing, right? ^__^ I hope you all liked the chapter, and please leave a comment! ♥
