Jaejoong stared down at the papers set out in front of them and pushed them aside. He hadn’t been able to find peace of mind in days, and his weariness was obvious on his features. The dark shadows underneath his eyes were prominent, and he was losing weight.
Maybe he’d been played.
“Jaejoong?”
His eyes snapped up, and he saw Soojung standing at the doorway. She looked at him, her concern etched clearly onto her delicate face. She took two steps closer to him before stopping.
“You look terrible.” She murmured as she crossed her arms in front of her chest disapprovingly, “You need to take a break.”
Jaejoong shook his head, “You told me that you wanted me to meet your new boyfriend today, right?” he forced a smile, “I’ll be fine.” Jaejoong quickly pushed the papers on his desk into a folder and walked over to his sister.
Soojung looked at him disapprovingly, but he ignored the look and set his hands down onto her shoulders. “Look, I’m fine - just tired, as usual.” Jaejoong smiled and pressed a kiss onto her forehead. “Let’s go meet him.”
“He’s waiting downstairs, in the lobby.” Soojung murmured, her concern temporarily pushed aside as Jaejoong placed his arm over her shoulder and began to lead her to the elevators. “I told him to wait rather than for him to meet you up here.”
“Well, it’s a good thing you told him that.” Jaejoong said as he pulled Soojung closer and kissed the top of her head, “I wouldn’t want to surprise him with how haggard I looked a while ago. It might make me seem like a lesser man.”
“There’s no way you could be a lesser man.” Soojung replied as she poked Jaejoong’s cheek and smiled up at him, “You’re my brother. I have nothing but the highest regard and opinion of you.”
“Thank you, and things should always remain that way.” Jaejoong pressed the down button and glanced at his sister, “So is there anything I should know in particular about this guy of yours? How did you two meet?”
“He’s a friend of a friend.” Soojung answered shyly, her eyes downcast. She bit her lip hesitantly, “He showed up at one of mother’s art gallery events a few weeks ago, and we just hit it off from there.”
“Ah, I see - one of those love at first sight kind of things.” Jaejoong laughed at his sister’s annoyed expression and pulled her into another hug. “Come on, don’t try to deny it. You must be pretty enamored by him if you’re willing to introduce him to me already.”
“I do like him a lot.” Soojung mumbled, her voice muffled by Jaejoong’s chest. “I don’t think I’ve ever introduced a boyfriend to our family so quickly before.”
“How cute.”
Jaejoong let go of his sister as the elevator doors pinged open. He let his sister go in first, and he punched the button for the lobby as soon as he was inside. He glanced at his sisters and watched her anxiously fix her hair, her eyes trained on her reflection on the elevator doors.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so nervous about a boy before.” Jaejoong joked as he pulled at one of Soojung’s long strands of hair. “Calm down, or else you’ll show up with wrinkles as soon as we get to the lobby.”
Soojung swatted him, “Don’t joke about things like that!” she frowned at her reflection in the mirror and tucked her hair behind her ears worriedly, “I don’t want to get any wrinkles. I swear, maybe I should’ve introduced him to Sohyang first. You just keep on irritating me.”
“You know you adore me.” Jaejoong countered as he leaned against the wall of the elevator, “Now come on, get closer to me because more people are going to be coming inside the elevator.”
As if on time with his words, the elevator doors opened. People filed in, and as usual, most of them avoided the eyes of Jaejoong and Soojung. They kept their eyes on the ground and cleared their throats awkwardly. It was not out of the ordinary for people to not want to associate with them because of fear or intimidation, but Jaejoong had never liked the feeling.
He didn’t appreciate being alienated because of what he’d been born into.
Jaejoong let out a soft sigh, and Soojung squeezed his hand reassuringly, her lips forming into a gentle smile. Jaejoong returned it and glanced up at the numbers at the top of the elevator door, wishing that they would just reach the lobby of the building already.
The doors opened, and all the people filed out. Jaejoong hung at the back, letting people leave the confinement before he did, and as soon as the elevator was empty, he followed Soojung out of the elevator.
He looked around the lobby and glanced at Soojung, who was also scanning the large expanse in order to find her boyfriend. “Did he tell you where he would be waiting?” Jaejoong asked as he stuck his hands into the pockets of his slacks, “Maybe he went out for a smoke?”
“No, I told him specifically to wait here.” Soojung muttered before she took her phone out of her bag so that she could call her boyfriend. She placed her hand over the mouthpiece, “Hold on, I’ll just call him and ask.”
She wandered away from him in the hopes of finding a better signal, leaving Jaejoong alone to his own thoughts and worries. Instead of wandering around, Jaejoong sighed and sat down on one of the couches.
He stared down at the coffee table in front of him for a few seconds until his train of thought was broken by the sound of someone clearing his or her throat. Jaejoong looked up, and he was surprised to see Junsu seated on the sofa across him.
A knowing smile flittered across the other man’s youthful features, and he stood up, signaling for Jaejoong to follow after him. Jaejoong didn’t bother to wait and quickly stood up, trailing after the shorter man.
Just as he was about to reach the other man, he heard his sister call his name.
Jaejoong turned around and his sister looked at him in confusion. She waved him over, and he glanced back at where Junsu had been, only to discover that the other man had somehow disappeared into the busy crowd of people passing in the lobby.
His disappointment was obvious, and Jaejoong slowly made his way back to his sister. As he got closer to her, he moved past a crowd of people, but got bumped from behind by a person.
He looked back, and Junsu smiled at him, while he slipped something into the lower pocket of Jaejoong’s suit jacket, before walking away like nothing had happened and like they didn’t know each other. Jaejoong watched the other man leave and slowly slipped his hand into his pocket to grasp at what Junsu had left him.
His fingers closed over the object, and he recognized it immediately to be a slip of paper.
“Jaejoong, are you sure you’re okay?” Soojung asked worriedly as she approached him. She quickly pressed her hand against his forehead before moving down to his neck to check if he had a fever, “You’re acting so strange.”
Jaejoong shook his head and a smile made its way across his face, “I’m fine Soojung, trust me. I’m feeling fine.”
Soojung frowned and looked at him doubtfully. “If I see any more signs of you looking ill later, I will rush you to a hospital.”
Jaejoong chuckled, “Fine.”
She reached out and took hold of his free hand, “Now let’s go. My boyfriend’s waiting outside since he had to go back to his restaurant to fix some sort of mishap.”
As soon as they were outside, and Soojung was momentarily distracted because she was looking for her boyfriend’s car, Jaejoong pulled the note out of his pocket and glanced down at it.
If you’re still in, come over at eleven.
He folded the note and placed it back into his pocket just before Soojung turned around to point him in the direction of her boyfriend’s car. He followed after her, and as they neared the Spirra, she faced him once more.
“Jaejoong, will you be free tonight? I want to catch up with you a bit more.”
Jaejoong smiled apologetically.
“I’m sorry, I have plans.”
o-o-o
Jaejoong looked around as he approached Yoochun’s building, fairly suspicious of anything unusual. After he’d managed to push away his paranoia, he walked up the steps quickly and made his way to Yoochun’s door.
He knocked twice, and the door swung open.
Junsu smiled at him, “Nice to see you again Jaejoong.” He said as he opened the door for the other man, “I was just about to leave.”
“I…” Jaejoong frowned, “Thank you for earlier.”
“No need to thank me.” Junsu replied, “It’s somewhat part of the job, I suppose. Did you see the money I returned to your bank account by the way? I also made sure to add the increase that Yunho requested me to give you.”
Jaejoong nodded, “I saw it. Thank you.”
“No problem.” Junsu smiled at him once more, “Now excuse me, I must leave. I am still primarily an accountant after all; I have a job to get to in the morning.”
Jaejoong nodded, “Good night.”
“Good night to you too Jaejoong.” Junsu replied before he walked past him and made his way down the stairs.
Just as Jaejoong turned to walk inside, Changmin appeared. “Oh, so you came. Good. I was hoping you were still interested.”
Jaejoong closed the door behind him and approached the other man slowly, “What is this all about?” he asked, putting his hands into his pockets, “I would like it if you explained things to me.”
“All in good time,” Changmin replied, “Take a seat, because I have some things to explain to you before I can move onto the better parts of what I have to say to you tonight.”
Jaejoong complied and sat down, “Wait, where’s Yoochun?”
“He’s working at the hospital. He’ll be back in an hour or so.” Changmin replied. He noticed Jaejoong’s confused expression, “The only reason he stayed with you for so long was because he was given time to be absent from work. He’s a doctor, and he works at the hospital I was staying in previously.”
“I see.” Jaejoong murmured, “What about you then?” he asked, raising his eyes to look at Changmin. “What do you do? Are you like Yoochun and Junsu, maintaining normal jobs while you work for the syndicate on the side?”
“No, the syndicate is my life. I suppose you could say I’m a henchman of sorts if you want to keep it simple.” Changmin replied as he sat down on the chair across from Jaejoong, “But I’m more than that essentially.”
“What is Yunho then?” Jaejoong asked. “He has a day job.”
“Yunho’s one of the higher ups of the syndicate, and I work underneath him. I am his right hand man.” Changmin answered, “Which is why Yunho assigned me, and not anyone else, to take care of you. We trust each other, and we work well together.”
“So you should know about his whereabouts.” Jaejoong said, “If you two trust each other, then I presume, that you know where he is right now.”
Changmin’s lips quirked into a smile, “Yes, I do know where he is. I’ve known where he has been the whole time you were asking me about it - I just refused to tell you. You see Jaejoong, things in the syndicate work in a sort of trading and trust system.”
Jaejoong stared at him, “So what, you only share things if I give you something in return?”
“Yes - share through mutual exchange, or share through trust. You have to work your way to earn another person’s trust, or you need to have enough of something in order to make people want to trade with you.”
“Where are we getting to with this conversation?” Jaejoong asked finally, studying Changmin carefully, “Are you going to share something with me, or will I have to give up something first?”
Changmin leaned back, “I need to ask you something first.”
“What?”
“What are you going to do if I tell you where Yunho is?” Changmin asked, his eyes focused intensely on Jaejoong, “If I tell you where Yunho is, and you get to meet him, what then? Do you have any actual idea about what you’d say or do?”
Jaejoong frowned, “Why do I have to share my plans with you?”
Changmin crossed his legs and shrugged, “Well, I’m the one with all the information at the moment Jaejoong. If you don’t share something, I’ll be a little less willing to share anything with you.”
Jaejoong’s lips formed a thin line and he ran his hand through his hair irritably. He glanced away from Changmin for a moment and considered the idea of just walking away from him.
He sighed.
He couldn’t - Changmin was right, he held all the information, and Jaejoong was sure that he wouldn’t be able to find out anything about Yunho’s location from someone else.
“Well…I’ll tell him that I want to be his ally.” Jaejoong muttered begrudgingly, his eyes averted and downcast. “I’ll tell him that I refuse to be left in the dark again, when I’m sure that I can do something to help him…to help him in any way possible.”
“Is that it?” Changmin probed, “Is that all you’d say?”
Jaejoong’s eyes snapped up and he glared at Changmin, irritated by the other man’s tone of voice. “I think you already know what else I’d say. I pretty much blurted it all out desperately the last time I saw you.”
Changmin chuckled, “I’m sorry.” He stood up and brushed his pants before he glanced down the corridor. After a few seconds, he turned his attention back to Jaejoong and held out his hand for the other man to shake.
Jaejoong looked at the hand in confusion before he raised his eyes and looked up at Changmin for a reason for the action.
“If all things go well, then you’ll be my boss.” Changmin stated, answering the question in Jaejoong’s mind. “I just want to say that I’m looking forward to working with you in the future, and that I hope all goes well between you and Yunho.”
Jaejoong stood up and shook the other man’s hand slowly. He pulled his hand away and placed it back in his pocket, “So what now? Are you going to give me the details of Yunho’s location?”
Changmin nodded.
“He’s in the room you occupied here previously.” He answered easily, “In case you’ve forgotten, it’s the second room on the -“
“It’s the second room on the right.” Jaejoong finished softly, as he stared at Changmin with an unreadable expression on his face. He swallowed hard and bit his lip uneasily, trying to think of something to say to the other man.
Changmin nodded, “Well, I’ll take my leave now.” He said with a slight dip of his head to acknowledge that he was leaving, “You and Yunho are free to stay here for the night if you want.”
“What about Yoochun -“
“I’ll be picking him up at the hospital.” Changmin answered easily as he made his way to the door, and not bothering to turn his head back to look at Jaejoong. “No need to worry about him.”
Jaejoong watched the other man leave, “Wait, Changmin!”
Changmin turned his head to look at him, “What is it?”
“Why is Yunho here?” Jaejoong asked before he sent an anxious glance at the door of the room where Yunho was staying. “He has his own place to live, in fact, I’m sure he has numerous places to go. Why did he come here?”
“He didn’t want to be alone.” Changmin answered before he slipped out the door and shut it quietly behind him.
Jaejoong stared at the door for a few seconds before he let out a worried sigh and ran his hands through his hair restlessly. He took a few steps closer to the door, before he turned back and walked away.
He bit his lip and stared at himself in the mirror hanging on Yoochun’s wall. His hair was a mess, and his dark circles were prominent. He looked skinnier than he used to, and Jaejoong could clearly see the apprehension etched onto his features.
What if he wasn’t the same person that Yunho loved? What if Yunho told him to leave the moment he walked through the door? What if Yunho got angry at him for not following his instructions?
The possibilities of what would happen the moment he walked through the door were endless, and Jaejoong didn’t know if meeting Yunho would bring him the happiness that he’d been hoping it would.
His heart clenched painfully in his chest, and he slowly made his way to the door, taking his time to approach it. Jaejoong swallowed hard and licked his lips nervously before he reached out and closed his hand around the brass door knob.
It was now or never.
The moment he walked through that door, things would only change even more between him and Yunho - if that change would be for the better or for the worse, he didn’t know.
He hoped that it would be for the better.
A bead of sweat rolled down his forehead, and Jaejoong wiped it away. He let out a nervous breath and twisted the door knob. He pulled it open slowly, and before he could bring himself to pull back, to give into his fears, he pulled it open wider and walked inside the room.
Yunho was asleep.
Jaejoong exhaled quietly before he approached the bed silently and sat down next to Yunho. The bed creaked because of his added weight, and Yunho’s eyes immediately fluttered open, meeting Jaejoong’s eyes.
“Hello.”
o-o-o
Jaejoong gently placed his hand down onto Yunho’s shoulder, “We have to talk.” He said softly before Yunho could say anything else. “I want you to listen to me.” He bit his lip and stared at Yunho, “Please?”
Yunho sat up slowly, his face only centimeters away from Jaejoong’s. “Here?”
Jaejoong looked around, “It’s as good a place as any, isn’t it?” he asked, his eyes settling at the window a short distance away from the bed. “I mean…us being anywhere else won’t change what I have to say to you.”
He turned his head to look at Yunho, who was staring at him intensely.
“Jaejoong…” Yunho shook his head and reached out, his hand so close to Jaejoong’s face. They stared at each other, and Yunho withdrew his hand before he inched away from the other man. He turned his head and looked out the window, “Leave.”
Jaejoong shook his head and reached out slowly as he fought away the fears he had in his heart and slowly held Yunho’s hand. “I…I don’t want to.”
Yunho’s eyes fluttered shut and a pained expression crossed his features. He let out a sigh and refused to look at Jaejoong, whose eyes were still solely concentrated on him. He could feel Jaejoong moving closer, and his body reacted to the touch, inching slightly towards the other man and not rejecting the feel of their bodies pressing close together.
“Please.” Yunho repeated, more desperate but with less conviction than before. “I don’t want you to get pulled deeper into this.” He swallowed hard and finally turned his head to look at Jaejoong, “You don’t want -“
Before another word could escape his lips, Jaejoong had already closed the distance between them and pressed his lips tentatively against Yunho’s. A small noise of surprise escaped Yunho’s mouth, but he didn’t seem to want to pull away.
Jaejoong’s eyes fluttered shut, and the two of them remained in limbo, unsure of what to do next. After a few seconds had passed, Jaejoong opened his eyes and pulled away, his face red and his heart pounding in his chest.
“Yunho..” Jaejoong bit his lip hard and he stared at Yunho pleadingly, hoping that the other man would understand the emotions he was trying to convey to him. He reached out and took hold of his hands, “I can be happy with you.”
Jaejoong’s words hung in the air, and Yunho looked on the edge of breaking down. He stared back at Jaejoong helplessly, and the other man simply leaned forward once more and kissed him again.
His lips pressed against Yunho’s, more forward and less hesitant, and gradually, Jaejoong could feel Yunho’s hesitancy slip away. Hands pulled him closer, and a tongue ran across his lower lip. Jaejoong opened his mouth, deepening their kiss and carded his hands through Yunho’s soft hair.
His eyes fluttered shut, and Jaejoong let out a small whimper as Yuno pulled their bodies even closer together. Jaejoong gripped his hands onto Yunho’s hair, making sure not to pull too strongly and as he let Yunho take control of things.
Yunho pulled away, and Jaejoong bit his lip. They gazed at one another, and Jaejoong’s heart was beating quickly in his chest. Yunho’s eyes turned away from him, and a shiver of fear ran up his spine.
“Yunho…?”
Jaejoong felt like crying, and he couldn’t really place his finger on why. Being rejected was not a new feeling, but to know that Yunho couldn’t accept him, that they were too far apart and could never -
“Don’t.” Yunho’s thumb brushed his cheek, and Jaejoong was rendered speechless. The other man pressed a kiss against the corner of his mouth, before slowly moving to his nose, to his eyes, to his forehead.
Yunho pulled away once more and cupped Jaejoong’s cheeks, “Is this what you want?” he asked questioningly, his voice barely above a whisper. His eyes bored into Jaejoong’s, and he pressed their foreheads together, “Do you really want to be with me? I’m a disappointing person Jaejoong.”
Jaejoong found it hard to speak, his senses and mind overwhelmed by Yunho’s actions. His heart was pounding so hard in his chest, and everywhere Yunho touched him left a sensation on his skin that never seemed to go away.
Yunho’s hands moved away from Jaejoong’s face before he completely enveloped the other man into at tight hug. He pulled Jaejoong into his embrace, and Jaejoong buried his face into Yunho’s shoulder.
“I don’t want you to regret this in the future.” Yunho murmured, his words barely reaching Jaejoong’s ears. “Please…Jaejoong, you can still walk out from this.” He continued, his voice sad but determined. “If you turn away now, I’ll still be able to let you leave. I’ll be fine with seeing you walk away.”
“I can’t leave.” Jaejoong replied, finally finding his voice. He pushed at Yunho’s chest, allowing them space to look at one another clearly. He smiled softly at the other man and ran one hand though his hair. “I…I won’t leave.”
“Jaejoong -“
“I love you.” Jaejoong said finally, the words escaping his lips and filling the air. Total silence filled the room after, and the two men could only look at one another, uncertain of what to do next.
Jaejoong’s smile grew wider, and he could only laugh at Yunho before he buried his face into Yunho’s neck and pulled the man back into a tight embrace. “Don’t be like this Yunho.” He murmured, his breath ghosting against the bare skin of Yunho’s neck. “Let me stay with you.”
Yunho was still intolerably silent, so Jaejoong slowly coaxed the other man into lying back down onto the bed before he got onto the bed completely and lied down closely next to him, so close that their breaths mingled and they could feel the comforting warmth of eachother’s body.
Jaejoong reached out and gently turned Yunho’s head, making him meet his gaze.
“Let me stay with you.” He repeated before he leaned forward and pressed another kiss to Yunho’s lips, the action completely innocent and natural - like he’d kissed Yunho numerous times before that night.
Yunho responded to the kiss, his tongue slipping into Jaejoong’s willing mouth as he took control and began to press for more. Jaejoong yielded to him, allowing him as much as he wanted, and it wasn’t long before Yunho was on top of him and leaving a trail of kisses down his neck.
Jaejoong bit his lip hard as Yunho began to ravish his neck, nipping and biting wherever he could. His hands ran up and down Yunho’s neck before eventually settling in the other man’s hair, clenching tightly whenever the pleasure felt like too much.
Yunho set one last kiss against Jaejoong’s collarbone before he moved away and settled next to Jaejoong on the small bed, the bed creaking slightly due to his movement. Jaejoong breathed in and out slowly, catching his breath, before he craned his neck and glanced at Yunho.
He didn’t know if he’d ever seen such an indecipherable look on the man’s before, but what Jaejoong knew was that it wasn’t the expression that he wanted to see after his declaration of love.
“Aren’t you happy?” Jaejoong asked softly, his apprehension and insecurity obvious in his voice and in his facial expression.
Yunho moved closer and ran his hand through Jaejoong’s hair, his hands moving through the soft strands in a gentle and reassuring manner that immediately relaxed Jaejoong and moved him to a point of drowsiness.
“I’m more than happy.” Yunho murmured before he pulled Jaejoong closer. He pressed his lips against Jaejoong’s forehead and he inched away only after a few seconds had passed between them, “Never…never in my dreams did I ever think we would end up like this.”
“In bed?” Jaejoong asked teasingly as a smile formed on his lips. Yunho chuckled and squeezed the other man’s waist.
“I was thinking more along the lines of us being happy together.” He replied, “But if you’ve been dreaming of us being happy in bed together, then I would be more than happy to make those dreams of yours come true.”
“You can do that some other time,” Jaejoong replied as he snuggled closer to Yunho and enjoyed the body warmth and overwhelming comfort the other man’s body provided, “I’m feeling…I’m rather sleepy.”
Doe eyes opened, and Jaejoong looked up at Yunho. “Aren’t you tired?” he asked as he reached out and brushed a lock of hair off the other man’s forehead, “You look so tired.”
“I could say the same for you.” Yunho replied, “Have you been sleeping at all? You’re much thinner and more tired than when I last saw you.”
“I’ve…I’ve been occupied.” Jaejoong murmured, “I’m better now though…now that I’ve found you.” He pressed a kiss against Yunho’s jaw, “You’ll never be lonely again now that I’m here.”
Yunho’s heart fluttered in his chest, and he didn’t know if he could ever love a person as much as he loved Jaejoong at that instant. He swallowed hard, and Jaejoong’s arms pulled him close.
“I’ll always be here for you now.” Jaejoong continued, his voice low and an absolute melody to Yunho’s ears. He absentmindedly traced circles on the skin exposed by Yunho’s shirt, which had ridden up, before his hand trailed upwards and tilted Yunho’s chin slightly. “I won’t leave.”
“I don’t think I’ll want you to leave anymore.” Yunho murmured in response, the words coming out before he could hold back his words and try to hide what he truly wanted. “After everything you’ve said and done tonight…” he gazed into Jaejoong’s eyes, “I don’t think I could watch you go, and I don’t think I could ever walk away from you ever again.”
“Are you that attached to me already?” Jaejoong asked with a smile.
“Like a moth to a flame.”
Jaejoong chuckled and pressed a kiss to Yunho’s temple, “I suppose that means you’ll never try to leave me again?” his smile grew wider, and he was fairly sure that he was radiating happiness at that point. “I don’t think I could watch you go either…so let’s just stay together, okay?”
A look of hesitancy crossed Yunho’s features, and Jaejoong found the other man’s hand underneath the blankets and squeezed it. While he didn’t know how many sins Yunho had committed, or why the other man was so reluctant for them to be together, there was one thing that he did know - which was that Yunho loved him.
He loved Yunho, and for now, as they stumbled into a new path together, that would be enough. There would be more than enough time for everything else. Right now, all he needed to do was convince Yunho of his love and that the other man was worthy of it.
Jaejoong ran his hands through the soft strands of Yunho’s hair, “You should sleep now.” He murmured as he repeated the action and began to coax the other man into sleep. “I’ll be here in the morning.”
He could feel Yunho inch nearer, seeking comfort, so Jaejoong moved closer. Yunho’s arm wrapped around his waist and pulled him closer. “I’ll be here.” Jaejoong repeated softly, “I promise that I’ll be here. I won’t leave you.”
Yunho’s eyes fluttered shut, and Jaejoong could feel the other man begin to give into his feelings of tiredness and the call of sleep. He hummed a soft lullaby, something his mother used to sing to him, and it wasn’t long before Yunho was snoring lightly.
Jaejoong’s smile softened, and as Yunho pulled him closer, his eyes fluttered shut as well as he allowed himself to give in and fall asleep as well. It took a little longer for sleep to come, but as he listened to the sonorous beating of Yunho’s heart, he slipped off into unconsciousness.
For the first time in a long while, they would both sleep well.
