When I was choosing my font, I typed out the quote I was going to have tattooed in all the fonts I was choosing between. I printed them out and taped them to the spot I was going to have tattooed. I just went with the one that felt right!

First of all, I love you for wanting a dark tower quote! It's my favorite series (: Secondly, in my experience, I find the easiest way to figure out a font you like is to go to the artist who will be doing the tattoo and have him/her draw it up in a few different styles. For my tattoo, the artist just wrote it free-style on my shoulder. (However, I don't suggest that, he's a close friend and I have a lot of trust in his designs)
Best of luck, I can't wait to see the results!

I spent a ton of time at http://www.dafont.com/ , they have tons of free fonts, all categorized (like 'script' 'fancy' 'gothic') and they all have a preview feature so you can see your quote(s) in the fonts in question.

Once I had the top ten or so, I downloaded them, then printed them out at various sizes and held them up to where I wanted them. When I had the font and size, I brought a fresh printout to the studio and said 'I want this, this size, right here,' and they used my printout to make the stencil. Voila.

I'm in the process of choosing a font right now. I looked at dafont and myfonts and narrowed it down to five. Tomorrow I'm going into the tattoo parlor to see what my artist thinks will look best, then I'll print it out in the size I want it in.

As far as clutter and such--your artist (if they're good--and they better be!) can change the spacing and add/take away embellishments.

Well. I think the font picks the tattoo, honestly. You'll find one ( ... )
