LOLITA

Can't believe it's taken me so long to find this place. I really need some help/advice. For what feels like forever now I've been trying to deisgn a tattoo based on Nabokov's Lolita. Because of the tricky subject matter, I'm finding it near-impossible. I don't really just want a picture of the girl as it's too vague but anyone who knows the book ( Read more... )

I think you'd do well to split up the text, something like:

"A change of environment
is the traditional fallacy
upon which doomed loves, and lungs, rely"

Also, since the book is not condoning pedophilia, why do you want the tattoo if you're afraid people will know what it's from?

I've never seen the Kubrick version of the movie, but the one with Jeremy Irons and Frank Langella isn't half bad.

I hadn't thought to split it up, sounds like that might work. Hmm but where to put it is the next problem.

Oh & I didn't mean "anyone who has read the book will know it's about paedophile" - I meant anyone on this journal will know, so I don't need to explain that it isn't seedy/gross etc :)

I don't know, I started reading the book and couldn't read that much of it because I thought it was a bit seedy and gross. Does it get better?

you could just get a piece of that quote -- like "doomed loves and lungs" or something.

i recommend the Jeremy Irons film version, for sure. although i think you should really see the Kubrick version at least once because Peter Sellers is an amazing Quilty and pretty much the only redeeming part of it, haha.

What about looking up all the different book editions for something on the cover that may spark an idea?

somehow I always end up sounding snarky in these comments, probably just because I always end up commenting here pre-coffee, but ya know, being "quite a little girl" (aside from sounding mildly creepy given the context of the question, hehe) has absolutely nothing to do with how much ink you can have on your body, right? You're not going to, like, end up on What Not To Wear because your tattoo is somehow disproportionately large. At least I hope not, because I'm 4'11" and have about 20 hours of ink that covers my arms and my entire back. But then again, I'm fat, so maybe that makes it okay ( ... )

Well yeah I know...I'm just really little & don't want any bold massive chunks of text on my body as yet; I have the misfortune of looking somewhat like a small boy if I don't keep my feminine side closely in check ;) I guess you're right though, it isn't *that* long.

Oh dear I see what you mean about describing myself as a little girl & a Lolita fan though, I'm not a weirdo honest!

I think shoulderblades might be a nice idea...

understandable! But I think a lot of the look and feel will depend on the font--like, if you use a big chunky typewriter font, it's going to look bulkier (for lack of a better term) than if you use something that's more delicate and handwriting-like.

Don't worry--I have seen some tattoos that are great big chunky walls o'text and yours is nowhere near long enough to have that effect. :P

i can offer no suggestions, but i think its great that you're getting a tattoo based on this book. i love this book, and was thinking of getting a tattoo based on this book, but everytime you mention this book, people just remember the subject matter, and think there's something wrong with you lol
