Like misslucyjane said, the more padding there is, the less it hurts, though I hear the ribs are generally painful no matter what. Also like she said, after awhile, you start releasing endorphins and the process almost becomes pleasant. I've sat for four hours or so at a time, and have had very few really painful moments.

I have a decent-sized piece on my ribs and everyone warned me it would hurt like hell. Even my artist asked if I was sure I wanted my first piece on my ribs. I did. And it really didn't end up hurting bad at all. It felt like a safety-pin scratching me, for the most part. The worst part was right below the ribs (the soft area). The shading felt nice, actually.
Also, I am a wimp.

Awesome tattoo, even if I hate Steinbeck, haha. And that looks like a great idea for your next piece. I love The Bremen Town Musicians story.
Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Omg I forgot all about that fairy tale! Thank you for reminding me. That would be a cool tattoo!
