I was up until like 3am on the phone with Tina last night and we devised brilliant plans AND, she opened her Paula Abdul poster she ordered while I was on the phone with her, AND THEY SENT HER TWO BY ACCIDENT. SO SHE GIGGLED AND ASKED ME IF I WANTED ONE. I mean, DAMN Homes, was *I* ever lucky to be on the phone at that moment. I do not have a Paula ( Read more... )

LOL NO BUT I AM - I didn't know any of that shit. And I don't mind gay people, I really don't. I think another part of it too is just slang in general. Like, oh, I don't go around saying "oh my God" because "GUESS WHAT I HATE GOD AND WANT TO INSULT HIM AND USE THY NAME IN VAIN", it's just become sort of like, language to me and the people I'm around and in turn it's become habit. I'm not saying that's not a problem and I'm not saying it's not okay, but what I am saying is most people who say those things probably don't even have an issue with gay people. I think they just say it.

No I'm not saying that, I KNOW we say it because we're referring to homosexuals, I know that's no coincidence. I don't even know.

That is so interesting - expand on that women thing, I don't know what you mean. OH one thing that really does piss me off though, is that they can have things like Black History Month and the BET channel (WHICH ARE TOTALLY, TOTALLY FINE. I AM NOT TRYING TO BE A RACIST BITCH. and lol when did this even become about race?! IDEK) but if we would ever suggest a declared White History Month or WET (LOL. WET.), everyone would flip a fucking shit. Is that the kind of stuff you mean? What do you mean.

GOOD QUESTION.

LOL I have those same issues... and with the other words that people use to. I totally dont mean to make this about race but back in the day nigger was an offensive word, and now African American people use it all the time as a greeting to each other... and call the white people crackers, which is suppose to be offensive to us, but I just find it hilarious... I just dont get it :\

Thanks for suggesting that.

On the subject of gay, heterosexuals have pretty much all the other words. Plus, it was pretty much assigned to queer people by hetero people in the first place, and it took a lot of effort to get the stigma out of it, so the careless way that it's recast into a negative connotation by (mostly straight) people is not particularly fair. Heterosexuals are using that word in a derogatory manner. You wouldn't ever go around saying, "God, that's so Asian!" or "How black is that? That's so stupid it's like having Down's Syndrome!" Gay is the same thing.

Oh I wasn't agreeing with it by any means, I was just wondering if there was a sort of double-standard going on but since lesaut up there gave a brief history of the word and where it came from and how it came to be associated with homosexuals, it makes a little more sense to me.

I don't really think that the privileged get to call double standard. "We gave you this shitty thing to make you feel bad, you managed to make it into something that you could live with, and now we want it back so we can make it shitty again?" Not really down with that.

Did that happen though? Did we give them the shitty connotation first? I'm honestly asking.

I'm pretty sure heterosexuals made the word apply to the gay community in the first place, because it meant a sort of crazy bohemian sexual lifestyle, like free of morals, unfocused, without control, etc. I mean, I personally try to use "homosexual" just because of the offensive origins, so personally I think it's been prejudiced society that has both created the word and taken a bad connotation from it.

For me I think it's just a word that's generally accepted to mean that, like a natural evolution of terminology, but that's a totally different thing from making it mean "stupid" or whatever...I associate that with when people say "that's so retarded" or something. I think that's someone pointing out a group they don't like and deciding to use their identity as an insulting slang term. Back when people decided to use "gay" for homosexual" they actually believed they were using a synonym for the word because they associated the two.

Also another example, "straight" I think is sort of an association with the idea of being normal and having morals, but nobody says "oh that's so straight" in a positive sense.

I know but that's exactly my point. They can pick a word to try to lift themselves up but they get upset when other people use the same word in a different meaning. It just didn't seem fair to me. A lot of people here are pointing stuff out, though.
