...I've suddenly had this image of a post-appoc world in which the surviviors in a small town move into the local Super Wal-Mart.

Think about it - food, clothing, furniture, weapons. Camping supplies provides cookstoves. And most the food at Wal-marts is packaged stuff that doesn't go bad for years, if not decades.

Wandering editorial thought: ( Read more... )

One of my favorite Saturday Night Live sketches involved customers shopping in Super Walmart, and they would go up to the Walmart employees to ask where they could go to find a certain item. The employee would direct them to the correct aisle, and then follow the instructions with something like "but here, take this umbrella because it's the rainy season in that section of Walmart" or "take this travel dictionary with you because they speak a different dialect in that section." ^_^

*giggles* That sounds like some of those stores...

..I've always really enjoyed the image of a post-appoc society living in a shopping mall - do you remember Irondequoit Mall (I can never remember if you were local to Rah-cha-cha or coming here for school, or both)? A two-story glass-ceilinged mall would make a good ... urm... village?

I think I've been to that particular mall. I was originally from Buffalo... The Walden Galleria would work brilliantly for that too :)

All the malls out here in Orange County are gigantic outdoor malls, which makes for a whole mini-city of shopping. California is a very strange land. ^_^

Mmm.. yes, it would! But it's, if I recall correctly, on unstable ground and sinking slowly.

I've never been to California... perhaps I should go sometime.

See also: "The Mist" by Stephen King, a novella in "Skeleton Crew".

D'oh, going to make me read Stephen King? *wince*

I suppose I could handle a novella...

Well, it's more that they're trapped in a supermarket when a weird, scary, and oddly-deadly mist descends on the town. I haven't read King since high school, so maybe I wouldn't like it as much now.

We used to do "self games," expecially when qlipoth was still in town, where the world suddenly ends. the first game would almost always start with:

GM/ST: "Okay, the world has gone crazy"(paraphrase)

Players: "We raid the mall. Oh, and Wegman's."

isn't that pretty much the "mall" setting of most zombie movies?

It could be? I don't watch Zombie movies... I'm kinda *abashed* scared of zombies.
