Need Advice: Books!

Feb 14, 2006 16:27

I need, in the next month of free time, to study up on the history of the British Isles from (and the rough approximations show about how little I know about history) 450 A.D. through the end of the colonial era (wow, that's a long span of history to read up on in a month!), and the history of North America from the time of Columbus' explorations ( ( Read more... )

books, cali, roleplay: settings

Wow, you have no chance of doing things in any detail...however, if you want some online stuff:

http://www.schoolhistory.co.uk/
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ (British timeline: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/timelines/britain/o_neo_bronze.shtml)

Whats it for? There is a chance i can offer some actual useful advice...though its a huge undertaking!

Good luck!

I don't want huge detail, I want a braod enough understanding to rewrite history for an alternate-history setting logically enough.

It may take me more than a month but I'm quick at learning from books.

Thank you!

Lots of other bits on...?

My British history is even spottier than my American history, coming as it does only through my Brit Lit classes. Whatever help you can offer is much appreciated.

check the community "theshortlist"

Tara started it, and it's filled with book lovers, cammies, and assorted other literati. I'm sure they could help. Alternatively, there's another community called "academicpagans" - they might know something...

I do but live to serve, m'dear!

I'd wish you a happy VD, but you always wrinkled your nose at me when I did, so I'll just have to say, happy chocolate day. :)

I hadn't considered historical fiction, no. It might be a good suppliment, thank you!

I won't soak up as much from TV as I will from books but I will certainly use those as an addendum, too.

Thanks!

Oh, and you were right on that other topic, striped ties and all. Did I tell you that already?

The Dudley Pope books are good for Royal Naval fiction, and almost anything by Bernard Cornwell (Sharpe series (2nd Maharajar/Penninsular wars), Starbuck Cronicals (American Civil War), Grail Trilogy (100 years war), Warlord Cycle (late romano-British/early Saxon period - an Arthur tale, kinda) and all the others, such as Redcoat (American Revolution)) are all good. Also Sharpe is good TV.
