Easter Dinner at L'Orinoco

Apr 16, 2006 16:23

After Mass, CJ and John headed back to the apartment. CJ buzzed around the kitchen making dinner for them. She put him to work dressing the table. Three places to set, but enough food for an army. She rubbed the pork roast with fresh herbs and kosher salt (there's an irony, she though) and put it in the over for no less than six hours while she ( Read more... )

"Watch me stand in the kitchen, obnoxious and hovering." Ten leaned against the far wall, sipping some red wine. The joke tried to cover a vaguely nervous tone in his voice and failed.

"If you're going to hover obnoxiously, the least you can do is segment the satsumas." she said absently, pointing to a bag. "And pour me some wine? Please?"

"Oui, mon coeur. Satsumas?" He poured her a glass of wine and set it near her--but aside, then picked out an orange and absentmindedly tossed it up and down with one hand.

"They're for the salad. I need...oh, like three I think. Thank you." she said, taking her glass up and drinking deeply before pulling out a bag of small red potatoes. "You don't need to be nervous, you know."

According to CJ's voice mail message tonight was the dinner. After making sure Rodney was settled in, Simon dressed appropriately for dinner with the Mayor and her husband, he make a quick stop by the liquor store.

It wasn't far from Dover to Strawberry Fields and soon Simon was parking. Frank, the doorman, said he was expected and directed Simon upstairs to the Mayor's apartment. He shifted the bottle from right to left and rang the bell.

Wiping her hands, she padded her way to the door in bare feet. She opened it with a broad smile and caught his hand before he could react. "Simon! I'm so happy you came. Come in, come in."

The scent of roasting meat, herbs, spices, tangy, exotic fruits and sweet, delicate vanilla melded together to wrap him in a warm embrace of what promised to be a delightful meal.

Only marginally surprised, although he wasn't sure who would answer the door, maybe hopefully John? Simon smiled at her. "CJ," he said. Pulled into her apartment, he looked around briefly for John before looking at her again and presenting her with the bottle he'd picked up. Glenmorangie 30 Years Old Malaga Cask Finish. "Not exactly wine, but I'm not a good judge of the wine of this region. Something...well..." he waved it and grinned shyly.

John poked his head through the kitchen door, absentmindedly chewing on a piece of raw spinach. "Simon, hello! Is that..."

He glanced at the bottle and gawked for a moment.

"You chose the six hour roast, ma belle," Ten said, and guided Simon towards the table. "Though I'm ravenous."

"I appreciate this, CJ. And please don't tell me you went to the trouble of a six hour roast for me." Simon walked toward the table and waited for his seat 'assignment'.

"It's Easter, Simon. Meat that takes a long time is tradition. I think you'll find, when you get to know me, exactly what kind of a creature of habit I am."

She clasped her hands and bowed her head, not particularly caring if they joined in.

Ten pulled a key out of his pocket and spun the chain around his finger once, leading the two of them into the living room. He stopped in front of a large blue structure that looked vaguely like a telephone booth. "Simon...I'm honestly sorry I've had to lie to you. To almost everyone. But I'm really not who you think I am, and let's just say it wouldn't go over well if everyone knew..."

And he opened the door to the...police box and walked in.

The interior was larger than the exterior.

Okay. So anything Simon had to say to CJ was completely lost when he walked into the small box and ended up in something so completely amazing it took away his ability to...think.

This was definitely more amazing than finding out Jayne Cobb was the Hero of Jaynetown. And that? Was pretty amazing.

His hand still in CJ's, Simon simply...stood there.

"Um..." Ten kicked the mesh floor for a second. The TARDIS hummed. "So yeah, this is the TARDIS. She travels in time and space. And dimensions too, on occasion. And therefore, so do I. Or I did, I've settled down."

He smiled at CJ, who smiled back almost wistfully.

"There's a mathematical explanation for how this works--she has near infinite interior space--but most people don't want to hear it. They're too busy staring." He trailed off.

She gave his hand a squeeze and let him look for another minute. "Welcome to the TARDIS, Simon." she said softly. "She's amazing, isn't she?"

At the compliment, there was a gentle purring sound all around them.

Stepping from the TARDIS, she shut the door and set Maeve down. She headed to the kitchen and started dessert, feeding the cat little fishie treats that Maeve took delicately from CJ's fingertips.

A Key Lime Cheesecake and a Triple Chocolate Torte found their way to the table as the rest of dinner was carted back to the kitchen. She put on the kettle to make coffee in her French press, and then she waited.

Ten entered with Simon, hand in hand, and looked at the table, then at CJ. "Where did you get those? They look brilliant."

Letting Maeve lick her fingers clean, she looks up with a grin. "Europa Bakery. Great selection. Next time if I order it ahead, I'm getting the Bailey's Irish Cream layered cheesecake. It looked divine."

She got up to go wash her hands and gave Ten a softer smile. "I was right?"

"Yeah," Ten said softly. "You were right." After a moment, he added, "You didn't feed Maeve too many of those, did you? She gets sick."
