Easter Dinner at L'Orinoco

Apr 16, 2006 16:23

After Mass, CJ and John headed back to the apartment. CJ buzzed around the kitchen making dinner for them. She put him to work dressing the table. Three places to set, but enough food for an army. She rubbed the pork roast with fresh herbs and kosher salt (there's an irony, she though) and put it in the over for no less than six hours while she ( Read more... )

Ten pulled a key out of his pocket and spun the chain around his finger once, leading the two of them into the living room. He stopped in front of a large blue structure that looked vaguely like a telephone booth. "Simon...I'm honestly sorry I've had to lie to you. To almost everyone. But I'm really not who you think I am, and let's just say it wouldn't go over well if everyone knew..."

And he opened the door to the...police box and walked in.

The interior was larger than the exterior.

Okay. So anything Simon had to say to CJ was completely lost when he walked into the small box and ended up in something so completely amazing it took away his ability to...think.

This was definitely more amazing than finding out Jayne Cobb was the Hero of Jaynetown. And that? Was pretty amazing.

His hand still in CJ's, Simon simply...stood there.

"Um..." Ten kicked the mesh floor for a second. The TARDIS hummed. "So yeah, this is the TARDIS. She travels in time and space. And dimensions too, on occasion. And therefore, so do I. Or I did, I've settled down."

He smiled at CJ, who smiled back almost wistfully.

"There's a mathematical explanation for how this works--she has near infinite interior space--but most people don't want to hear it. They're too busy staring." He trailed off.

She gave his hand a squeeze and let him look for another minute. "Welcome to the TARDIS, Simon." she said softly. "She's amazing, isn't she?"

At the compliment, there was a gentle purring sound all around them.

"Too busy...staring. Yeah," Simon said slowly, his head nodding. "I can see why."

"Amazing. Yes. Good word for that."

"So...we made the potatoes today, but we went back in time to do them so we'd get them done faster. Hence the 'time-consuming bit...There's more to it than the TARDIS, as lovely as she is." He nodded to CJ to help guide Simon up towards the back. "But that might require tea."

Holding his hand and covering the back of it with her other, she walked backwards up the ramp and guided him along.

"Tea would be lovely, Ten." she said, never taking her eyes off Simon's. This was the shock of her life...she had some idea what he was going through.

Top 3%, remember? Brilliant surgeon? Genius level? Gifted?

Suddenly a small child in a world he didn't understand. Tea? Perhaps. Or that whiskey he brought John. That had appeal, too.

This was terrifying. Completely and utterly terrifying. Ten had no idea if Simon would forgive him...he'd only told as much of his cover story as was necessary. The rest was true. His feelings were true.

He just happened to be someone else.

Swallowing hard, he led them into the kitchen and began to boil water. "How do you take yours, Simon?"

Take...how do you take...John was talking to him. "Oh. Sugar and cream," Simon said. He was still a little distracted.

A lot distracted. "This is simply amazing," he repeated again.

The TARDIS purred a little more and Ten mentally rolled his eyes at her. She did so back, in his head, and then subtly altered the lighting to a more neutral and soothing colour.

Finishing the tea, he set down three mugs--Lady Grey, each to perfect specifications--and settled into a chair. "Aye, she is amazing indeed. But that..." he sipped some tea, "isn't the end of it. You see, you probably gather that I'm not John MacDiarmid from Maryhill Road. But there's more to it than that..." A long pause. "I'm not a human being, either."

She hadn't let go of his hand yet, just to provide that bit of contact, that tiny offering of stability. She nodded at Ten's words, then leaned in with a whisper, "But I am, just in case you were wondering."

Simon sucked in a breath, not exactly sure what to make of that little revelation. He squeezed CJ's hand to let her know he acknowledged her and her statement.

"You," Simon looked briefly and a bit shyly at CJ, "didn't look alien over dinner." Or during sex afterward.

This...could be going worse. Maybe. Ten tried not to wince, gave CJ a grateful look, and slugged down some tea. "I look and work..." an eyeroll, "'normal' insomuch as humans are normal, on the outside. Some of the inside's the same. You'd be surprised at how inefficient plumbing is throughout most species. The rest..."

He stood up and took his shirt off. "There's really only one way I can prove it to you without a CT scan." And he walked around the table, took Simon's free hand before he could react, and placed it over his heart--standard human placement. After he could tell the pulse had registered, he moved Simon's wrist over about four inches. An identical pulse in syncopation with the first.

She sat still, trying not to do anything to make this any worse, yet tensing in preparation to chase Simon down if need be. It had been hard to wrap her head around...but at the school there had been so many strange people that a very old, human in appearance, dual hearted guy barely even registered on the weird scale.

She looked into Ten's eyes past Simon's shoulder and smiled softly. It'll be ok, relax. she wished she could tell him. Instead she stepped around Simon and placed her hand over the back of his as he felt the heartbeats.

"What do you think, Simon?" she asked gently.

The freak out passed quickly as the medical doctor took over. His expression went from bewilderment to concentration as he felt the twin pulses beneath his hands. "Remarkable," he said softly, looking up at John with a smile on his face.

He was full of health questions but figured that would just have to wait. But it was truly remarkable and managed to eclipse anything else he'd heard, seen or done.
