Hmmm... Tarlanx.

You know, I have had this username for so long that I have forgotten where the TARLAN part came from. I'm sure it had something to do with a book I read while on holiday in Cornwall, UK, about 20 years ago.

The X on the end was purely because it turned out that Tarlan is a real name in the Middle East so it had already been grabbed on AOL by the time I had an internet connection. Rather than trying to find another name after I'd already started to get known as Tarlan in fanfic circles, I added the X.

Now, during the recent LJ debacle, I went to grab my name at some other Journal places and was torn when TARLAN was available. In the end I decided that I'd probably never post to TARLAN because I've become too used to having TARLANX as my account name for everything!

See...pretty boring really.

No, not boring at all! If you ever remember the book you read in Cornwall 20 years ago, I'd love to know what it was. Do you know what Tarlan means, in Arabic? I'm curious about that too. I know how you feel about being torn though. That's why I grabbed liresias Silly really! But at the time, I was hitting myself over the head with a plank over the misspelling. I don't care now though *g*

I found this online....

The precise meaning of tarlan we could not obtain from the Kirgiz. One said it was a bird of good fortune, others compared it to the khomai, the legendary bird, a noble breed like the eagle, a heavenly bird like the phoenix, which never comes down to earth, always commanding the upper heights of the atmosphere. If its shadow falls on someone's head, that person will be made a king and have good luck. From it comes humayun -- the auspicious, august epithet of sultans of the Turkish Empire.

Weird but that is PERFECT for me!

Thank you for the excerpt. It's so nice when we get it right to match our characters, or that which inspires us.

Berlinghoff like Berlinghoff Rasmussen, time-travelling fiend in the ST:TNG episode "A Matter of Time" played by Matt Frewer. I love time travel, Matt Frewer (not as much as I used to when he was Edison Carter/Max Headroom or, well, Berlinghoff Rasmussen), so, I thought 'why not?'.*shrugs*

I won't tell you what the '79' means, that'll be my BIG secret ;)

Ah! I'm not sure if I ever saw that ep! I'm definitely up for checking it though *sauntersofftoMininova*

But I do know Max Headroom! That show was just classic!

Yeah, and 79 ... well now, that wouldn't be your birth year would it? *slylook* But don't TELL me!! *g*

We need some mysteries to keep being mysteries! *ggg*

Yeah, the "Ithilian" part of my username is pretty easy to nail. I joined LJ in the throes of a LOTR obsession (that's where I first consciously noticed slash too (how could you not!) and I was all over the Gondorcest.

Lilith is an older interest of mine, back when I was studying The Gnostic Gospels and alternative interps of Christian theology. The whole mythos of Lilith really appealed to me. (If you don’t know of her, do a google -- she was Adam's first wife in the Garden of Eden, created of the same stuff that made him, but she left him because he wouldn't let her be on top during sex. God begged her to return to him, but she refused, so God then created Eve out of Adam so she'd be subordinate. Lilith meanwhile went on to stir up all kinds of trouble. So that seemed fitting.

(Another tiny part of my name is credited to the way David Wenham said "Lil" in Dust. His cowboy accent was wretched, but boy is he attractive when he's whumped!)

The line in Tolkien "Ithilien, the garden of Gondor now desolate kept still a dishevelled dryad lovliness." has always stayed with me.

Ah, I have heard of Lilith - I've read about her somewhere ages ago. My memories are vague but it certainly strikes a chord ... the part about Adam's first wife. I think the same Lilith was also a character in some film David Hewlett was in. I'd have to look it up on disk. It was a pretty terrible movie.

Hmm, now that I think about it, I might have read about her in a series of alternative gospels that were very New Age about 25 years ago. I can't remember the name of the woman who wrote about them. I think her name was Ann something, for some reason. I'll have to ponder it a while and dredge up the name proper.

And yes, to David Wenham being attractive ... whumped or not! *g*

Gah! Not Ann. It was Corinne Helene.

OMG! I found that I hadn't replied to this and it's been two years almost! some other friends have been doing the meme recently so I linked to this and reread it all.

LOL! I'm so sorry and I was really glad to snurch it from you, so you're welcome! It was fun finding about about others' names.
