Bweee! I love your brain. Yes. It was cheesetastic but we've had episodes less effective than this -- when I rewatched it, I was riveted. It wasn't the plot that held me, although I do think the fallen angel idea, on paper, is cool. And SPN is a well acted, well written, well directed show--better than a lot of others with higher ratings, but it is, and always has been, not a logical show. Your X-Files example is priceless.
But hey, the show's been ruined, ruined for ever, so many times now. It was ruined forever in season 2, ruined forever in season 3, and now in season 4. The show's been ruined forever A LOT. And yet! Oh, hey still good and still on the air and Sam and Dean are still Sam and Dean! *g*
It's, frankly, rather ridiculous, and I love it for that.
I dunno, I doubt that "ridiculous" is what they're trying to achieve, at least not in a non-comedic episode.
I love it when the show takes itself seriously. That's what I was getting from the first few episodes this season -- as if the writers had finally realized the show's potential and gotten down to business. Those episodes felt gritty and real and as if so much was at stake, and now it seems to be lapsing into eye-rolling silliness and I don't love it for that. I want ridiculous I'll...go read Twilight or something.

I have to admit, A Spring Cold still holds a special place in my heart, too. Oh, hobbits, I'll never stop loving you.
