Fiscal responsibility (not!)

So, when your city is facing a big deficit, you can't come to a contract agreement with your police department for over two years (and at the same time, you're bidding for an Olympics and lying about whether taxpayers will be on the hook for it) of course the proper and logical thing to do when you do come into some funds is to go and blow all the Read more... )

What is even sadder is that this wasn't even reported in either of Chicago's 'mainstream' newspapers. _The Reader_ is a free paper published throughout the city, whose biggest claim to fame is that in the days before Craigslist, _The Reader_ was *the* best place for apartment rentals. Of course, the Sun-Times and Tribune won't touch this, being as they don't want to be on Daley's enemies list.

Welcome to The Chicago Way(tm)!

I used to work at the Gloria Jean's in the financial district (in the building next to the stock exchange - but GJ's is long gone). I took the El in that first area that was supposed to be helped by the newly expired TIF.

Let me just say, those are scary places to be at night. The nights when I had to close and was out after most of the business travelers had already commuted... some of the scariest times of my life. And I bet that nothing has been done about it - why actually make the improvements you promise? That would be, well, un-(Chicago)Democratic!

I think some of those areas are generally better at night, at least right over there, but the whole police/Daley administration standoff continues, the city is getting more and more dangerous in general, and some people are wondering how long it's going to take before Chicago starts looking like Detroit.
