Word for thesis/dissertation?

Hi, all. I've got a character in a story I'm writing (medievalish fantasy setting) who's writing a thesis/dissertation in his academy, but I feel like those both sound too modern for the setting. I'd like to know both what they're called in any other languages you speak, just to help me generate some ideas for what to call what he's working on. If ( Read more... )

How about "master piece". The piece of work a journeyman creates to demonstrate that he has the skills to be a master?

That has an art connotation to me, while the topic he's been researching/writing about is a little more science-based. I'll keep it in mind, though. Thanks.

Thanks. That's definitely a possibility, although it's a kind of sciencey topic that he's writing on, so I'm hoping to find something that makes people think "science" a little more explicitly.

Some fields use Monograph. A Treatise is also possible and more classical sounding.

In Dutch the word is "scriptie".
