When someone says "我约你" does this generally mean that they are asking you to go on a date or is it just an invitation to hang out ( Read more... )

For me, it generally means an invitation to hang out, rather than a date, because "我约你" can sound pretty informal depending on the way you say it.

For a date, we generally say "我跟你约会" as a more formal option. Then again, 约会 can also be considered a simple invitation to hang out. In the end it really depends on what tone of voice you use when you say this (:
