parallel translation helper tool

mentalguy, a friend of mine, made this tool for me a while ago, and it just occurred to me that other people might find it useful.

Duizhao (named after the Chinese word for placing things side by side for comparison, 對照) is a parallel translation helper and HTML generator. It gives three windows to enter text into, and it outputs a nicely formatted HTML ( Read more... )

I'm not a fan of over-literal translations even when they're accurate, and this isn't even that:
  • Leat is better translated "with you" or "to you"; "on you" would be ort.
  • Seo is "this", not "that"; "that thing there" would be something like an rud (sin) an-sin.
  • Sgoinneil is a derived adjective from the noun sgoinn "care, efficacy, neatness"; "greatness" would be mórachd or meudach.
Why not write "Thank you! This is neat!"? Since that's what the Gaelic actually says after all.

The grammar's totally fine. It's just that it's not very different from English, at least in this instance.

Neat! That does look useful for all sorts of stuff.
