Thank you very much! I had no idea that mgoi was not the direct translation of xiexie. (I'm not a Cantonese speaker at all, and only barely familiar with Mandarin from studying it in college.)
Cantonese is different from Mandarin in many aspects. Cantonese is a hybrid between Chinese and Tai-Kadai language/Viet but of course Cantonese has more Chinese elements inside. Mgoi maybe derive from Tai-Kadai. Thai calls "no" as "mai", and Cantonese calls "no" as "m" and "mai" Mgoi maybe from Tai-Kadai
