वह स्कूल तो यहाँ से बहुत दूर है।

What does the तो mean in this sentence? I figured it meant something like 'so' or 'then' when at the beginning of a sentence, but that's not the case here (they aren't confirming anything, they are making a statement).

It can also mean "just, indeed, certainly" or "moreover".

Ah thank you, dictionaries always seem to be useless for such short words.

i'm curious as to what the sentence is actually trying to say.

That school here is very far?

that sounds wrong to me. if you replaced yahaan with vahaan, it would make more sense.

"That school is indeed pretty far from here."?

Why would you replace यहाँ with वहाँ? It would just be changing "here" to "there", they both make sense (feel free to correct me, I've got barely few months of hindi under my belt ^^).

मेरे विचार से इस पंक्ति का अंग्रेजी में इसका अनुवाद होगा
That school is quite far away from this place.

यहां तो शब्द दूरी की बात पर जोर देने के लिये के प्रयोग किया गया है। It is used to add emphasis and certainity to the distance of the school.
