Update on Blue Christmas

On our Tuesday re-check, the vet said Annie could start the slide into real pain any day now. She had lost so much weight that she was literally a skeleton who spent all day sleeping. Thanks, Sam. I know it was the right thing to do, but this morning I felt like an assassin taking her out to the vet.

It's always so hard, even when all reason says it is the best or only choice. Breathing our last in the arms of someone we love is not a bad way to go.

I always promised her I'd be with her at the end and I wouldn't let her suffer, and maybe that's what kept her so peaceful. Dogs understand a lot more of what we say than the "experts" know. They've shared their lives with us for so many thousands of years that they know us very well -- and vice versa, if we only try.

Thank you! Now tomorrow, Jack and I will go to my oldest daughter's house for a party, and he will get to spend time with her two friendly labs. That should pick his spirits up a bit.
