the road i'm on

So Bob Langer just won the MIllenium Technology Prize. Normally I would be just like "cool," but whenever I hear any news of Bob Langer I cringe just a little. Why? Because I was *this* close to working in Langer lab, but administrative stuff got in the way. And every time I hear the words Bob Langer I think of all the mistakes that I made in my ( Read more... )

I know exactly how you feel; I still don't really know what I want to do cause with my education I've just been taught the basics of many things, but have never really gone greatly in depth to anything. However, you just need to remember that you don't need your dream job right out of school; once you get more acquainted with any field you'll get a much better idea of if you like it/what you want to focus on. Then you can move around jobs til you find what you really like. I'm really looking forward to that part of my life, as long as you work hard you'll be liked anywhere, and then you can really fine tune what you want to do. It's gonna rock!

Yeah, ugh, I feel exactly the same way. I didn't have a mentor who gave me good advice. Like if you don't take optional classes, there's nothing all that special about having gone to MIT (besides the brand name). I only took what I needed. And that research is very valuable. And that UROP isn't necessarily a "lab job" - I could have found other UROPs that didn't mean me sitting at a lab bench all day. And that if I'd done a few UROPs (and not necessarily in my major), I would have discovered what I'm good at or interested in. Part of me thinks that giving up a stellar engineering education was worth it for the music double major I got. It's hard; if I went back in time, I think I still would have double majored in music. There wasn't enough time!
