Best to do what's been the most likely cause of Mass Street Comics to have gone bellyup: get your comics for cheaper online.
(not even talking of stuff like Amazon, but living on the north american continent you've got acces to online stores that ship there with regular 30% or such discounts on the cover price)

Thing is, I don't really buy comics anymore, unless it's a TPB compilation. So, Hastings and Borders are usually enough for me. Well, Hastings anyway. Borders is rather expensive at times for absolutely no reason.

A graphic novel adaptation of some classic literature is a wonderful idea. For years I've been wanting to do something similar or an illustrated biography, but I just don't have enough motivation to push it through. You can always try illustrating like a chapter or so of your favorite work to see if it works for you and go from there.

My favorite comic book store in Michigan went belly up too about two years ago. It was also clean and origanized and manned by very helpful and nice staff. What made it more sad is that about two or three years before they closed, they moved from a cramp little basement shop to where they were then. I think one of the reasons why that place went out of business because of a store specializing in anime and other Japanese stuff.
