Notes on Maui

Last month we spent a week in Hawaii. Jason had a C++ meeting to attend in Kona, but decided that he didn't want to just hear about our adventures at dinner this time, so we all flew out for a week on Maui before Alice and I came home and he hopped over to the Big Island for his meeting.

Yeah--there was clearly a fine line between immigration and slavery happening. Apparently there is now a movement to try to re-establish the natural environment on Maui, which would pretty much mean shutting down the sugar industry (and, one person noted, eliminating 8000 jobs). It'll be interesting to see where it goes.

It's an amazing place. It's one of those places that is stunningly beautiful, despite all the people who tell you that it's beautiful, if that makes any sense. Kind of like the Alps :)

Liz & I saw _Ulalena_ when we were in Maui in early 2004. That was the show in which I saw an aerial fabric act for the first time, and it put the bug in my brain to figure out where I could try that out. It probably would have eventually happened anyway, but you can trace a clear path from that single event to the current existence of the Boston Circus Guild. The universe is a weird and unpredictable place.

I wonder if the part of the island you were on was particularly humid? We've stayed at Kihei and Makena Beach (so just about as far away as you can go from where you were!), and it was not humid at all. I know Kihei is supposed to be the driest part of the island.

It mildly amuses me that we've done few things in common (we went to more of the pre-colonial sites), but we did enjoy food at several of those places. Mama's, in particular, was the site of my one-day-after 40th birthday dinner...

Oh no, it was hot and brutally humid all over. El Nino is spitting tropical storms out all over the place and messing with the trade winds.

Oh, huh. I'm glad we didn't decide to go there this year after all. Sorry to hear how brutal the weather was!

Hawaii is great! I'm glad Alice is outgoing enough to where she could find someone whose family is enjoyable to hang out with.

With sushi, what wines do you prefer?

Ruby was a trip. She's also an only child and basically laid eyes on Alice and decided that they were going to be friends. We're hoping they might turn into pen pals.

If there's a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the menu (which there almost always was, there--they're slightly more rare here) that's my go-to.

That sort of pen pal would be great for Alice, and Ruby, I'd bet.

The New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs can be really nice, and that's what I'd aim for too. Although I usually go for sake.

Trader Joe's apparently gets some very good New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs in frequently.

Sadly, I'm not a fan of sake, although Jason had a sake mojito the other night that I quite liked.
