"I gave you life, and now I'll take it."

...Said Taras Bulba to his traitor son Andriy before shooting him dead.

The Russian director Vladimir Bortko might well have said the same about his new movie. He gave a life to another filmed version of the story...and managed to kill the aforesaid story quite effectively.

Here's the trailer:

What year is the story set in? That woman's white dress looks definitely early 19th century.
I think you are right about the effect of a cavalry charge--the people unfortunate enough to be in the way would be knocked down and trampled, not flung into the air.
I giggled at the standard heroic soundtrack borrowed from "Gladiator." Hee.

Excellent review! I watched the trailer before I read your comment, and Braveheart was the first thing that came to mind...and I see it was the same for you, lol!

I watch Bollywood, so I'm used to the excesses of battlefield gore...and the man who can speak for five minutes with great lyricism, in spite of having a spear lodged in his throat. ;)

It all looks very pretty from the trailer though.

Well...Bollywood is Bollywood, though. They do just what's expected of them and don't pretend to make super-movies.

One person who's definitely pleasant to look at is the Polish girl. The actress is simply gorgeous-looking, and I wish there were some male actors like that!

She IS very pretty. And somewhat familiar looking, although I can't quite decide who she reminds me of.

On Bollywood, the thing is, they think they make wonderful movies. And sometimes they do, but mostly not. ;)
