Conclave by Robert Harris is excellent.  Beautifully written, it tells what happens when a Pope dies and the Cardinals gather to vote in a new man.  Or as the tag line on the back says, "The Power of God, the Ambition of Men."  I've seen ( Read more... )

Must get to reading Shoes of the Fisherman one day; utterly riveting movie; powerful performances, and jeez do wee need people like that today!

My husband is currently reading Magpie Murders and raving about it. I may have to break the habit of a lifetime and read a book he recommends :)

I bought Conclave for my mum for Christmas but she hasn't read it yet, thus foiling my cunning plan to borrow it.

I haven't seen The Young Pope, but it is definitely about conclaval hijinks, and that's also a sub-plot in the French priest soap opera Churchmen, which is on Netflix.

I made the mistake of buying the Magpie Murders as an audiobook, not having read it (I use them to get to sleep, so I'm always missing bits). It's great, but I really, really got confused till I finally listened to enough in the right order... Should have read it first!

Thanks for the recs!

I'll trade you two. The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell. First contact story, with Jesuits. Devastating and marvelous. Also, Summer in Orcus, by Ursula Vernon. A portal story a little too grim to be YA, but with some quirky, original funny bits.
