Have just finished two books this morning - well, I have one by the bed and the other on the breakfast table!
Conclave by Robert Harris is excellent. Beautifully written, it tells what happens when a Pope dies and the Cardinals gather to vote in a new man. Or as the tag line on the back says, "The Power of God, the Ambition of Men." I've seen this book referred to as an intelligent thriller. But it isn't a thriller, just a complex, interesting book. The descriptions of Rome, the Vatican, how the whole Conclave system works are fascinating and the characters are beautifully drawn. In typical Harris style, the research is impeccable - did you know that Cardinals have 33 buttons on their cassocks, one for every year of Jesus' life?
Now, if you want an intelligent mystery, try Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz. I loved this book - I have never read one quite like it before. It's a Russian Doll book, every story has another story inside it. And please don't look at the ending first. It won't really help.
