The book takes place in Provence, and the place is superbly evoked. Which is great because it is one of my favourite places, too. I am not sure if the story on which the book is based comes from a real folktale or not, but certainly the history is correct. Where is the physics professor they would have roped in within five minutes.
The truth is that they have been influenced by Dr Who (especially the Troughton era) and most of the episode consisted of people running around to no great purpose. PT and cohorts used to read the script very slowly at rehearsals so they had fewer lines to learn. The show had to fill in with running sequences when they acted at normal speed.
