Blimey! A BBC fantasy adaptation that cuts right to the heart of the novel, necessarily stripping away some of the richness, but laying bare the strong bones. Wonderfully cast, beautifully filmed, and instantly comprehensible. I am going to be glued to the TV every Sunday for the next six weeks.

I am deeply sorry to hear of the death of Graham Joyce, a lovely bloke and an excellent author of dark fantasy, horror, and some things that are unclassifiable. I can't say I loved everything he wrote - I think you have to be a bloke to actually like 'The Tooth Fairy' though no doubt someone will come racing in to tell me I'm wrong, but his books ( Read more... )

Ina and I went to see The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (in 2D, of course) yesterday. The number of people queuing to see The King's Speech bodes well for that movie in this country at least, though most of the crowd were old enough to actual remember George! (I was born in his reign but am not old enough to remember anything else about him.)

This is really really good. I thought at first, when we started with Harry Potter we were going to look at the loonies again, but Pullman, and Garner and Colfer and Will Self and all sorts of other intelligent people talking about seminal books with the child as hero is really great.
