Reckon this just might be my next DVD purchase (after pay-day).
My father saw it as a ten-year-old when it was first released, he claimed it had quite an effect on him - as you say, an uplifting final sequence. Funnily enough, it was he who took me (then a ten-year-old) to see the Kubrick/Clarke '2001' when it showed at the Rialto Leytonstone.
