Hmmm... I don't really have any personal rules about neighboring stalls. Your rule definitely makes sense, but I'm not sure I had ever thought about it before this. I usually just take the first open stall I see. If the one I go for happens to be occupied, I may just go to the next one I happen to check. Maybe you picked the instinctive first choice, and the others ended up next to you because that was the second one they checked... That, or you're awesome and everyone wants to be close to you.
I couldn't agree with you more and often ponder why someone would CHOOSE the stall next to me when others are available. Do you really want to do your business that close to another person?! I also almost always choose a stall with a real wall and not a middle one if possible. Another case of me wanting as much privacy at that moment as possible
( ... )
Oh no I totally agree with you. I've brought this up before when guys talk about skipping urinals (as if no one has ever brought up the phenomenon.) I tell them that we do every-other stall, too, and they are usually quite surprised. I guess women would never go so far as to wait in line until an ever-other-stall opens up like they would with urinals. It's just instinct to give people some space. It's like sitting next to someone on an empty bus. You aren't crazy.
You definitely aren't crazy. Me, personally, I couldn't care less whether someone's peeing in the stall next to me... but I've heard about this from enough other people that I get the feeling it's pretty widespread.
In fact, I've put way too much thought thought into which stall is the best to use at work, given the scenario that I have first pick of the four empty stalls, but assuming someone will come in after me who would not want a next-door squatter. (Answer: Stall #1, because there's two non-adjacent stalls for the hypothetical second person to choose from, including extra large wheelchair-accessible Stall #4, just in case.)
