They probably talk to him for a variety of reasons, interest probably being one of the most prominent. Someone being less than savoury rarely stops interest and curiosity, and since I imagine all who talk to him are doing so over the communications devices, they feel safe from harm.

Of course, I am not a psychologist, but those would be my guesses.
