it's interesting watching this now vs when i was a kid. I had two simultaneous tracks going through my head - the nostalgia part of me that felt some sort of warm fuzziness when watching it as if it was an old security blanket, and the current part of me that kept on thinking, "yeah, this is pretty problematic."

I think for me the main problem with the film is in its first act where it tries to have its cake and eat it too. It's been a while since i've watched the 1998 anime series, and watching Badlands Rumble made me want to pull the DVDs out and watch it all again. The feel of the whole thing was very familiar, like seeing an old friend for the first time in a decade, but with a nice burst of freshness that made it a real treat.

it's strange how flip-floppy i feel about this movie. On the one hand, it does a very good job of capturing the magic of classic Muppets that i have memories of as a kid and in a way that i think can appeal to new audiences as well as old. On more than one occasion, i've found that Timm's work has had some pacing issues in the first fifteen minutes or so of his films before settling into some great work. so i watched this because i was wiki-hopping. I was looking at the individual actors for the upcoming Avengers movie and when i reached Scarlett Johansson i saw "Christopher Nolan's The Prestige" and decided to click on it to see what it was all about since i'm generally a fan of the Nolan brothers' works. It felt worth watching, so i did.

Having just finished watching the series 2 finale of Sherlock and having recently seen the newest Holmes film (which are both loose adaptions of the story The Final Problem), one thing sticks out as the most striking difference between the two of them which is this:
( If you haven't watched the movie, the telly series, and/or know anything about the original Holmes story, consider the next line a major spoiler. )

Once the remaining two episodes of Sherlock series two air i'll probably do some sort of review and compare/contrast analysis between that and the new Holmes movie, but i wanted to have a quick word about the treatment of Irene Adler's character in both franchises.

It was an excellent movie, there's no question about that, but it suffered from some similar issues that I had with Source Code in its revealing of information. As in, for a multi-billion dollar project, i don't have any issues that skewed programming would make GERTY more loyal to Sam than the corporation, but i do have issues with the idea ( Read more... )

i started off a little turned off by this because i'm not a big fan of voiceover to deal with narrative content, but i quickly got over that once i understood its context.
