The magnificence of Sam/Gene has been on my mind recently, what with the serendipitous discovery of a couple of fics and my own creative endeavors, and I wanted to pose a pair of rec fests. One for fics in which Sam and Gene "get together" in entirely character and perhaps even canon-appropriate ways. In other words, they remain utterly true to

I think defining anything as OOC is very hard, because our perceptions always factor into how we view a character. And some people have multiple conflicting views on characters! For instance, on any given day I view Gene as homophobic or knowingly bisexual and I fully believe in them both. I could happily go on and on about either version of Gene and to me these interpretations are supported by canon. I also find that some people (The Daily Mail/Tom Graham) put more weight on the crude, bombastic, one-liner speaking, deconstructed single-dimension aspects of Gene and others (most of fandom) prefer to point out all the ways he's a fully rounded person who occasionally has insight and shock, horror sensitivities. Whenever someone says they find all LoM fic out of character (and they have, in the past), I tend to find myself believing they belong to that first set of people ( ... )

I very much appreciate your additions here. And yes, there is a great deal of cuteness in canon. I love every moment you list there.
It's just... my post was inspired by the fact that I had just read a fic (Yellow Ribbon) in which the "Gene and Sam end up having sex" seems plausible despite his very canonesque ways. But I have also LOVED fics in which they are totally schmoopy and there's NO angst at all about the fact that they're two men having sex. And Maybe calling it OOC isn't appropriate, or I should have defined what I meant by that.

Maybe, instead of calling it "in character" or "out of character", the categories could be "in line with the show", i.e. stories where it all happens in secret, you know, like deleted scenes from the show, where they lead their normal lives but get to it "behind the scenes". So it could be believable that it happened in canon but was just left out.
Then another one where their situation has changed, by whatever, so that they are able to live together and/or show their affection in public? Or not that public, but maybe within their circle of friends? The gay community? An S/M club? ;) The future... Wherever...
I agree with Loz that the second category would not be OOC so much but rather "out of canon". I'd like to think that Sam at least would not have too big a problem to show his feelings openly, given a chance.
