Discussion: The glories of Sam/Gene, in character

Nov 09, 2012 12:02

The magnificence of Sam/Gene has been on my mind recently, what with the serendipitous discovery of a couple of fics and my own creative endeavors, and I wanted to pose a pair of rec fests. One for fics in which Sam and Gene "get together" in entirely character and perhaps even canon-appropriate ways. In other words, they remain utterly true to their personalities, yet the author makes you believe that they could have somehow started up a sexual relationship. The second rec fest will be for fics in which they are deliciously and gloriously OOC, but all the more lovable for it.

With no further ado, here are three recs from me in which Gene is still a magnificent homophobic bastard and Sam is his tortured, confused self and they really do get it on.

Yellow Ribbon by Constance. I'm a huge fan of Constance's Inter-what?, one of the few instances of deliberate intercrural sex in the fandom (go ahead, just read the fic), and Yellow Ribbon is as beautifully written but takes a bigger, plot and canon-filled look at the psychologies of Gene and Sam and what really makes them tick.

A strange mistake to make by lozenger8. I love so many of Loz's fics so very much, I don't think I could pick a favorite (not true). But this is certainly on my list of top whatevers; they're already at it, but the reader can tell right away that there's been a massive amount of extremely weird, extremely awkward and nonverbal communication about whatever it is they are or aren't doing. Oh, Gene.

Nothing left to lose by petronelle, which requires that you assume that Sam enjoys all the punching and pushing he receives in canon... not such a stretch of the imagination, is it? Again with the difficult communication and the hot but angst-laden sex.
