All he’s got to warm the empty places is a bottle Gene brought round once which they somehow never got to drink together. Sam silently raises a toast to him and waits for the buzz to settle in, numbing the dull ache.

“You OK, mon?”
Sam looked up to find Nelson giving him that particularly disquieting look of empathy that Sam had come to both appreciate and resent. Nelson knew things, but he wasn’t talking.
“How much have I had to drink tonight?”
Nelson shrugged. “One is too many and a thousand’s never enough.”
The words sounded familiar. Like something out of AA.
If anyone in this nightmarish existence needed twelve steps, it sure as hell wasn’t him. Or was it?
A new option. Insanity, coma, time-travel or acute alcoholism. He’d have to think about that.
But first he needed another drink.

“Regrets?” Sam asked.
Eyes the colour of the sky at dawn smiled into his. “Why should I? It was right last night and it still is.”
“There's nothing egoistic about you.” Sam grinned.
Gene frowned. “Ecclesias-what?”
He truly was home, Sam thought.
