As Nancy said, there's some venture capital that somebody's never gonna see again.

I have not heard any particulars. Bankruptcy, bought out and carved up... the possibilities are many.

I don't know if it is only FanLib the fic archive shutting down, or if it is the entire thing, including the writing contest "my2centences" stuff -- which I imagine has been paying the bills. Or almost paying the bills.

I can't say this is a happy event: all the folks who went to FanLib because the Intarweb was too mean are going to come back.

I'm kinda snickering over partly_bouny's recent insistence that they were fine and doing well.

partly_bouncy: The people who are there [FanLib] don't have any problems with FanLib and its corporate nature. They see the positives associated with it: Better customer service, less fandom related drama, issues being dealt with in a timely manner. FanLib will continue to attract a large audience who accepts this as many teens and others understand that advertisements and the ability for site operators to profit off a site are fundamental to providing a quality service to the audience. Product, quality product, in the end is what matters to fandom and FanLib has demonstrated they can deliver one that can be worked into people's fandom experience.

I apologize for the lengthy quote, but in hindsight her eagerness to rake in cash by creepy means should not have been even a mild surprise -- although her "it's all about the money!" was at the end of her plug for FanLib, and I don't think anyone made it that far.

Ah. Hence the urgency for partlybouncy to act *now* while the field looks to be open? Interesting.

Maybe she was hoping to make a big pitch before FL shut down, so she could use them as a good example of a company making money marketing to fans...

Heh, I sort of hope so, because that would be seriously awkward for her. I was more thinking that if she had some inkling of it, it could work as a 'what not to do' example:
never mind the fanfic, just skim off the user data and generate targeted spam! Entirely different business model! Will make VCs rich! buy now!
