I bought my plane tickets a few days ago. I fly to Oslo on 22 January. I fly back from Berlin on 18 August. I realised that I'll be spending my 21st birthday alone somewhere in Norway. Mostly, this makes me really happy; it's exactly the kind of life I want to live. But here, where I can spend hours talking to people but still feel starved for ( Read more... )

let's see, travel story. when i flew to england the first time, i had my face pressed to the window as we flew over ireland, and it was the most gorgeous thing i had ever seen. i didn't sleep one bit on the flight. i had never been out of the country, and i am a total anglophile, and had been waiting my whole life to visit england. our flight left at like 6pm new york time and arrived at 7am english time, and without sleeping on the flight, i was wide awake with a whole day to get through. but the moment i stepped off that plane i knew i wasn't going to sleep.

i wound up awake for 38 hours straight, and loving every moment of it. well except that last half hour in the pub when i almost fell asleep into my drink.

i've lived in four states, moved about 14 times, gone to 9 schools, and none of it had any effect of "otherness" until i was sleep deprived in london and soaking up the accents.

Tell me the truth: do I *really* have to comment on this here? GO! And with gusto!

Do not fear travel guides. If you do, then check out Let's Go (aka the Backpackers Bible). Maybe it will ease your fears: all editions are written by college students at Harvard. My big bro wrote for New Zealand and Southeast Asia, the latter when he was younger than us. He didn't know any of the languages and had a tiny, tiny per diem on which he lived. Maybe that point of view, from other starving, slightly nervous students, will be refreshing?

Found one of the neatest effects at home, actually: I flew out to NZ on the 4th of July, and ended up landing for my transfer in LA just after the sky had darkened for fireworks. The city was sparkling from fireworks below, there were little poufy mushroom-cloud fireworks if you looked off to the horizon, and every so often as we descended towards the airport, one went off right beside the plane. Gave an amazing sense of a celebrating America, which is funny for a beginning-abroad kind of trip, ne?

You will rock Norway and Germany.

p.s. look what i found on someone's random diary:

Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums

#326 The Cure- "Disintegration"

"According to the kids on South Park, this is the best album ever made. According to many depressive Eighties minded-kids, it's the only album ever made. On "Fascination Street" and "Love Song" Rober Smith's voice shakes like milk as he makes adolescent angst sound so wonderfully, wonderfully pretty."

P.S.- Bridget if all else fails, you're welcome to join my pity party. Me and you and The Cure. You supply the wine, I’ll supply the DVD. Though I’m sure you’ll figure something out.

[This will so be my life once I turn 21.]
