Psst... your coding has gone wonky, I think it's partly the mis-closed bold tag after characters, but the end's weird too.

Formatting aside, it's a lovely little ficlet! You really transmit how James feels,how it hurts him to be just friends.

This is really sweet, and expresses something very important about friendship...that it's easy to be friends with someone during good times, but much harder at bad times. But that's what really proves a friendship worthwhile, being able to stick it through.
