Author's Notes: The first thing I've written in over a year! And such a tiny drabble! I am hoping to get back into writing.
Being friends with Lily is, perhaps, the most difficult thing that James has ever done. True, it's also one of the most amazing things to happen to him. But, somehow, that seems to make it worse.
Being her friend when she's happy, that's not so bad. Congratulating her on becoming Head Girl, smiling when her eyes light up at the prospect of apprenticing a Potions Master after Hogwarts, celebrating a crushing victory in Gobstones at the expense of Sirius and Peter… No, those aren't the moments when just being Lily's friend tears James apart.
It's the tears, caused by her cow-of-a-sister's harsh letter, which he wishes he could tenderly brush away. It's the fear at the prospect of entering a world so full of hate towards her blood that he wishes he could banish. It's being close enough to reach out, but too far to hold her, when all James wants to do is make things right.
