Is There A Church of the Magi?

Okay, so I'm deep in the weeds again and I took the opportunity of the Memorial Day weekend ( plus an extra day, yahoo! ) to tackle some of my Harry Potter fanfic WIPs.

Sigh

Yet again I find myself needing to create an institution that doesn't exist in the Potterverse just to get my story moving.

So here's my question -- has anyone ever seen a fanfic ( Read more... )

I'm not at all religious myself, but I agree with you that there must be some sort of religious/spiritual tradition -- perhaps more than one -- among the wizards. It could easily be a Christian tradition, so I see no reason that "Church of the Magi" wouldn't work. I like your ideas.

I'll definitely take a look at that "chaplain" fic -- sounds interesting.

The only HP-and-religion story I remember reading is this one: PUSH, which asks the interesting question of what would happen if an evangelical Christian turned out to be magical, was sent to Hogwarts, and yet felt that magic was wrong and devilish. It's a well-done piece.

Hey thanks for the feedback =^) and the story rec. I'll definitely check that out.

And yes, A Merciless Affection is really FANTASTIC. It's totally het, it involves Severus an an ( of age ) student - absolutely no coercion involved, and it does have some religious elements ( minor ) later on in the story. So if you're okay with that, it's really an awesome story. It's romantic without any sentimentality and the OFC is a real person. She's someone you could imagine meeting in real life. And the writing is wonderfully controlled. I think you might really like it. =^)

*blushes* Thank you!

I love the idea of a specifically wizarding Christian tradition, especially if we assume that the Magi were, in fact, possibly wizards. But then, I love the respectful use of religion--ANY religion--in fiction. I look forward to seeing what you do with this!

Spirituality and religious practices have always fascinated me, and from what I've observed throughout my life, even people who aren't actively or openly religious often still have some private or inner belief system. I try to reflect that in my writing because I consider it an important part of making a fictional world and fictional characters seem "real."

Lol! Oh you are most welcome =^) Heck if I could afford to bind it, it would be bound and sitting on my bookshelf ( with your name big and bold all over it of course ). I consider this story to be one of the all time greats ( ... )
