Is There A Church of the Magi?

May 31, 2011 22:11

Okay, so I'm deep in the weeds again and I took the opportunity of the Memorial Day weekend ( plus an extra day, yahoo! ) to tackle some of my Harry Potter fanfic WIPs.

Sigh

Yet again I find myself needing to create an institution that doesn't exist in the Potterverse just to get my story moving.

So here's my question -- has anyone ever seen a fanfic that has anything like a Church of the Magi?

I keep thinking there must be some kind of...CHURCH for the wizards. And I'm finding I need to create one for my OFC Ophelia Broomall and another original supporting character who will cross ( at least for now anyway ) The Healer's Apprentice and Confessions of a Cornwall Grad.

This is partly inspired by Verity Brown's brilliant OFC fic A Merciless Affection www.fanfiction.net/s/2297701/1/A_Merciless_Affection which actually posits a Hogwarts chaplain. I take that idea a step further in Healer's Apprentice and intend to use it in Confessions as well. But I'm trying to come up with a good name.

Currently I'm calling it the Church of the Magi, spiritually tracing its roots back to the Adoration of the Magi, i.e., the three wisemen who followed the star of Bethlehem to the stable where Mary and the baby Jesus were in order to adore Him and give Him gold, frankincense and myrrh ( yes I capitalize the h's when I'm referring to the Eternal - it's the fallout from 12 years of being raised Southern Baptist and 8 years of Catholic school - yes the 2 religions go well together; they're like chocolate and vanilla, anyhoo...) and the members are called Adorants.

Does that work? Or does it sound utterly nuts?
