She didn't remember anything after the blow - it had all been black, cold and...blank. There had been nothingness, and it had felt instantaneous; one moment she was in excruciating pain - more pain than she'd ever been in her life, begging him to please, please end it, stop it before she could fully change and hurt anyone she cared about - him.

What a thing she had had to ask him to do.

Death had been a peaceful darkness she had been almost reluctant to leave - if only because she knew that there lay a certain amount of serenity in oblivion, in nothingness that was unachievable in life.

There could never be any mistaking her voice and when it cut through the silence of the suite - he heard it, clear as a bell, even from the bedroom on the upper floor - Megamind felt his blood run cold.

Of all the cruel twists that Fate could possibly pull out of the hat, it had to be this one. It had to be that another Roxanne somehow stumbled into his room, intruded on his grief, ignorant of what she was doing and searching for her version of him - a man who knew nothing of the Nexus, or Naughtyless, or that date in the coffee shop when he had managed to get her to try his favourite doughnut.

A woman who was Roxanne only as a technicality, yet still enough to wrench the wound back open, pulling him fully out of the numbness that had begun to descend, and back into the burning, screaming, insane and unbearable world that was life without Roxanne ( ... )

There he was, her Megamind - her wonderful, perfect, beautiful Megamind. Except…except he looked so defeated, so broken and hurt and drained and it broke her heart so much that she had been the cause of it ( ... )

As much as it pained him... He had to look at her. As foolish as he knew it was, as much as he knew that she was confused, not really his Roxanne... He had to be sure.

Besides - typical Roxanne - she had all but placed herself directly in his line of sight anyway. All it took was a slight turn of his head and there she was - vibrant, real, alive - filling his vision, a sight that should be a blessing but caused him physical pain ( ... )
