It's amazing how badly the Republicans are likely to get swamped in New York this year. Obviously, New York is a blue state, but it's always had a very competitive Republican party (though one much more liberal than the national party). Twelve years of Pataki's ineffectual leadership has left them in a shambles, though, and they are facing a massive rout. I hope Spitzer will have a good plan for leading the state, because he has a great opportunity.

I'm a displaced Rhode Islander. I was just talking to Mom and Dad about Chafee. I had an impression of him as decent, due to his voting record, but Dad cleared me up. He's a snake, apparently. He votes on the Dem side whenever he's sure that his vote won't count. It makes for a good appearance.

But his opponent is way more of a demon. I asked Dad if he was going to switch parties just to defeat Chafee, but he said, nah, he wanted the Dems to beat him on their own.
