There's an interesting article in todays' NYT entitled
For Latinos in the Midwest, a Time to Be Heard
. It's a great article, well worth the read.
But what really stuck out to me was the name of the town featured here:

Hey! Remember, the state was basically formed by abolitionists and you can't get more liberal than that. *g*
There's a town called Freedonia, too, founded by former slaves.
Cute Law Clerk Boy is from Liberal.

::snort:: "Hail, Freedonia!" I guess the name wasn't funny until after whichever Marx Brothers movie it was that featured Freedonia as a fictional country. And it's probably only funny to a small number of nerds like me now. *g*

Kansas actually used to be really liberal...see "What's the Matter With Kansas?"
However, it reeks of irony now, for sure. To make matters even funnier, it's in Bob Dole's neck of the woods.
I do have first hand knowledge that there are actual liberals in Liberal, Kansas though. My parents are friends with 2 of them. ;)
