You are expecting that people who have no expertise at anything (politicians) can determine what will work in the economy, the environment and for individuals.

You ask for angels, but we have pond scum whose only proven skills are convincing 50.1% of registered voters (alive, dead and illegal) to give them a job where they can enrich themselves, their families and sponsors and get to pass laws affecting others while exempting themselves.

Wish for unicorn farts to power our cars, that will be more realistic.

We the people have to stop buying the rhetoric. Unless of course, we want to return to the days of filthy water, soil, and skies. I guess that's what some people want. Maybe the fumes they've been forced to breathe are causing them to "think" that way?

You don't "have to be ready to trust big business" because big business is created by government regulation. As regulation creates prohibitive costs on doing business, the more of it there is, the more you facilitate big business and harm small firms, in many cases preventing them from entering the market in the first place. With less restrictions on the market the more firms you have which in turn creates its own preventative measures and ensures that firms act responsibly.
