This was well done, in my opinion

Cue griping from conservatives about how it's not race or gender, it's the "takeover of america by socialists" in 3... 2... 1...

Which is especially funny since we've only had government-mandated private insurance for everyone for about a week now, and yet people are trying to say the socialists have already taken over everything. What twats.

We're about 4 years from actually having it, really. What we have now is a law that will make it happen in the future. As of right now I'm not sure anything has changed on the ground.

Not that most people will see a change in 2014, either. The horrible socialism of 90% of workers getting whatever group plan their employer provides. There's not much choice (vs. Germans having 200 plans to choose from), but it's not a socialist restriction of choice...

(Expounding in general, not arguing with you, obviously.)

Liberals falling back on their ever favorite crutch, racism.

Meanwhile, their failed policies are still not getting the racial results that they want.

God forbid those irresponsible people who get breast cancer at 40 be able to get health insurance.

Well that does seem pretty reasonable. I apologize for jumping to conclusions. So can I assume that you are in support of spending more money on education for inner-city and poor rural children?

It's always about race, especially when some people want it to be.

yeah racism always works to the advantage of the minority.

i mean, people are always so willing to believe cries of racism right? like, we can't even see examples every day in this community of white people acting like being black is this amazing special privilege and you can brand someone forever with a scarlet letter.

when is the last time you admitted something was racist?

It's only racist if you let it be, right?

obviously we choose to be offended, because not talking about it will let people know we don't like what they're saying way better than any so called "words."

just like getting rid of traffic cops will end speeding.

so remember, the official message from White America to Not-White America is "shut up and we might not shoot you"

I've been saying this since he got elected. Some would argue that the status quo does not equal racism (or sexism or homophobia), but I would wholeheartedly disagree.

I was so naive. **I really thought racism in America was on its way out. I really did. And the election, well, I thought that proved me right. What it did, however, was polarize and incentivize those racist feelings just under the surface, that I clearly was ignoring in my optimism.

**I just joined the internet, like, 6 months ago. I've gotten a swift lesson on basically all evil since then, thanks to LJ.

Welcome to the jungle. :) But don't give up hope just yet - things really are better than they were even 10 years ago, just not as much as some would want to believe. It is my fervent hope that the fact that the radical right is turning into such a terroristic group now is that in their darkest fears they realize they're becoming as extinct as they ought to be - I like to think of it as their death throes, but they keep holding on (must be that wonderful healthcare they can afford).

Ok, heart to heart time...

Things ARE better, and given time and a natural tendancy things WILL GET BETTER. BUT have you ever heard the phrase "Im not racist, but you're making it tempting?"

I honestly have, and considering what the guy was dealing with, I couldn't blame him one iota. I don't agree, but I couldnt blame him. And the attempt to deamonize and therefore silence such things will NOT help the issue. It will only slow it down more as the person who feels trully racist keeps it festering. And on top of the people who just feel like they are being brushed aside by actions designed to try to equalize things NOW will have a chance to be made racists via resentment.

You have to let these kinds of things get ironed out. It will take time, there is no instant answer that will do more good then harm.

And for the record, it's my hope to see both extremes die out (a good mind will NOT shut out any idea based on who said it), but I most sincerely doubt it.
